Instead of just a two car single tram line like Portland, why not have two tram lines from Production to SFU, giving you a total of four cars?

Then, you could still have the same cars as portland, you could phase everything so that there could be a car arriving every 2.5 minutes.

SFU on the other hand:

You'd have a tram every 5 or 10 minutes, at peak vs. non-peak times. You could build it right from production way station and according to google earth, could probably make a straight line without infringing on many air rights of private land in the area. The view would be Awesome up the side of the mountain and it could serve as a tourist attraction as well!

Most of the land directly south of SFU between the Gaglardi/University Dr intersection and the campus is actually a park reserve.

I don't think there would be issues with it being a park reserve, given that it's suspended above it.

For SFU, they should build something like a people-mover system or mini-monorail.

The "mini-monorail" is proven technology and currently used in Singapore.

I agree. We already pay out multitudes of taxes to subsidise their education. If your young and you have to pay rent, sometimes you can't go to higher learning. Why should we spend money on a gondola when we can add new street cars and metro lines.

But are those rail cars able to negotiate the extreme grade for roads to SFU, say for example, Gaglardi Way? Or you talking about some small rail lines that start somewhere from Hastings?

This gondola idea is fun. Translink should study it.

It would be interesting to know differences in operating costs between this and the 145 buses. Those buses get worn down a lot from the constant mountain ascent & decent. Plus, the articulated buses are woefully underpowered and slow for the ascent.

The tourism part can't be ignored either. Their could be some decent opportunities here. It would also go well with Skytour.

Yea, i was thinking that too....it's the same reason why part of the Evergreen Line needs expensive tunnelling.

And scenic too. I almost think it would be better proposed as a project that the University runs. Charge for non-students, get some fare revenue from Translink (they wouldn't need as many buses) and charge for tourists. The Summer season (tourist season and school's out) could have guided commentary and charge a premium. Make it a glass bottom, even. Very little cost for the taxpayer, students benefit, translink benefits, the University benefits.

Translink Review of Millennium Ridership Growth.
Ridership on the M-Line is as of Fall 2006 was 69,642 per weekday.
1999 forecast for the M-Line (with Evergreen feeding into it) was 75,000 per day. The report says that ridership has likely met the forecasts.

Evergreen Line vs Millennium Line extension could pit mayor against mayor

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan supports a $1 million TransLink study looking at extending the Millennium Line west towards UBC. But politicians in other cities say it's too soon to start thinking about that, while the Evergreen Line remains on hold.

The Millennium Line proposal would extend rapid transit from Commercial Drive to central Broadway and eventually west to the university. But Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan says the focus should instead be on getting the line to the northeast sector off the ground, which was promised ten years ago. The Evergreen Line still needs $400 million in government funding before it can go ahead.

TransLink Chair Malcolm Brodie says the Evergreen Line is a top priority, and the potential expansion of the Millennium Line is still many years down the road.

TransLink will vote this week on whether to approve a $1 million study into running the Millenium Line from Commercial Drive to central Broadway, and eventually out to UBC. Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan supports the idea. If the expansion is completed, it should be done by 2009.
