While NBCC and UNB are slow to come to the city centre, the School of Rock is growing up near the Waterfront - it's now the Atlantica Centre for the Arts and is offering a lot of classes in different arts/entertainment fields.

I heard about it on the radio and was impressed with their website:

Awesome! Yes, UNB have to get all news facilities in Uptown, the city should help to attract them.

Do you have some other news about 100-Units appartment complex ?

This is very huge ...

The Politics here as well I dont understand. The main concern of politicians it seems to please the Irvings(Really). I was at a lecture where the mayor gave a speech to our class and our student president could run loops around the guy. There needs to be leadership not politicians look out for the masses or overral growth its what they can do now and who there not going to piss off.

Do you think the current boom will help to change citizens mind ?

I come from outside of Saint John and the province as well, and I really think Saint John is underrated within the province.

I heard some strange comments about Saint john, anyway.

Like any city people have bad things to say but there hesitant to live the problem is here people have bad things to say and can't wait to get it. I dont know if the boomw ill change people's mind but might bring in a whole new rush of people. There will be jobs so where there is jobs there is people which also creates more needs. The problem may lie in if people just rush into retail and construction with no plan or scheme. In the same regard try telling someone in the north end that our city has alot to offer not to sound elitist but they might have a little reason to get out. When the uptown improves like Kwajo said there will be a trickle down effect.

While this might not be a perfect match to the original waterfront development plan it might be a good trade -- Long Wharf is a lot closer to the current uptown action than the Lantic Sugar site.

Any opinions on the swap?
I think the trouble with the Lantic Sugar site right now, is it's too much of an island in terms of development for many things. If you start development of retail and attractions close to the core, they get the business crowd before/during and after work. People aren't going to walk to Chapters at the Sugar site at lunch very often IMO. Better to sacrifice the Sugar site now to get things rolling, and look at adding it to the mix in 20 years depending on how the port has evolved then.

I also wouldn't be in favour of a big box at the Sugar site, again it's just not close enough to downtown that someone would come out of the store and walk downtown in most circumstances. It might just generate road traffic downtown with little spinoff other than more congested thoroughfares.

I'd like to see far more of the University downtown or at the water, that would spark a good group of people living downtown driving retail, and encouraging landlords to invest in their buildings for higher rents. That might even drive conversion of the upper floors of some of the old buildings to loft apartments/condos.

I also like the idea of some new cinemas that someone suggested. An increased flow of entertainment would be good. Go to dinner and a movie after work sort of thing, and maybe a drink after.

I would be very surprised if Chapters get a store in Uptown. The city should drive a revitalization program for the Princess and Prince Willam as well. Like Someone123 and I said before, at this point, the streetscape of these streets is awfull and unwelcoming for business. However, the buildings are stunnings therefore there is a ton of potential for this area. This kind of program could be a spinoff for others projects like lofts, stores, restaurants, hotels and could force landlords to upgrade their buildings as well.

It`s not the 100-units complex they plan to build at corner of City Road and Blair Street.

Its awesome to see new appartment buildings going up

They're just removing the red paint from the brick on the facade. They already did it to the side of the building facing Grannan St., now they're working on the Canterbury side. It's all part of Irving's restoration of that block

I think that's part of Centre Beam place, in which case, it will be offices. Word is they'll be putting an addition above the old Chinese restaurant to make the outer wall flush and add some space, much like they did on the Church (or Churchill...not sure) St. side with the new entrance/lobby off the courtyard. If I can get back in there with my contact, I'll see if I can get some pics of the work being done inside...it's actually quite impressive.

...Saint John Poised for the future

The City's future is bright as today's entrepreneurial Irving family and global companies like Repsol YPF join the public sector in making Saint John, not Fort McMurray, the energy hub of North America.
With about $3 billion already committed and more than ten billion announced, and more planned to be announced, Saint John is poised to convert the foundational investments in oil, LNG, and nuclear power into thousands of permanent jobs.

SAINT JOHN - ENERGY HUB.....
Home to:

Canada's largest oil refinery
Atlantic Canada's only Nuclear Power Station - Point Lepreau
50% of New Brunswick electrical generation capacity
Ice free deep water Port and supertanker Terminal
Projects Underway:
New LNG terminal - $1 billion
Nuclear Plant refurbishment - $1.5 billion
Natural Gas Pipelines:
Emira - $350 million
Corridor - $82 million
Power transmission line to U.S.A. - $50 million
"Green" Wallboard plant - $45 million
Projects Announced:

New Oil Refinery - $5-$7 billion
2nd Nuclear Power Plant feasibility study - $2 billion
New Justice / Police complexes - $30 million
Redevelopment of Fairville Blvd into major retail hub - $150 million
New Medical school
NBPower seeking 400 MW of wind energy
Under Consideration:
Power plant - $1 billion
Petrochemical plant - $2 billion
2nd Nuclear Power Plant - $2 billion
Saint John is indeed poised for the future and 243 Prince William Street will be the address at the centre of the re-birth of this historic city.
