The customs area at YVR just received a huge LED marque over the customs booths. It shows short clips of Vancouver, Arrival baggage carrousel information, customs info, a clock, etc. I had my hands full so I did not take a photo, will try to when back through in a couple of weeks.

Air Canada to introduce the only daily non-stop flights from Vancouver-Yellowknife

VANCOUVER, June 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada today announced that it will
expand flights to the diamond capital of North America with the launch of the
only daily, non-stop service from Vancouver to Yellowknife. Jazz will launch
seasonal service on December 1, ending April 2008, with 50-seat,
made-in-Canada Bombardier CRJ aircraft. Tickets are now available for
purchase.
"The introduction of the only non-stop flights from Vancouver to
Yellowknife links the vibrant and growing economy of Canada's north to Air
Canada's global network with convenient connections to and from Japan," said
Daniel Shurz, Vice President, Network Planning. "We expect these flights to be
popular with both business travellers from Vancouver as well as leisure
travellers from Asia. The Yellowknife to Vancouver fights will complement our
current services from our most northern Canadian destination to Edmonton and
Calgary."
Flights will depart Yellowknife at 09:05, and arrive in Vancouver at
10:40. Flights will depart Vancouver at 12:15, and arrive in Yellowknife at
15:45. Flights have been timed to offer convenient connections to and from
Tokyo, Osaka, and points within British Columbia.

Jazz operates a fleet of 58 CRJ-100/200s.

transportation for passengers and cargo to more than 170 destinations on five
continents. Canada's flag carrier is the 14th largest commercial airline in
the world and serves 32 million customers annually with a fleet consisting of

the yukon gets a lot of travel - i know a guy who works all over the province and flies in and ot f places all the time - every week - he must have to go to prince george at least once a week comes home next day flies to the okanagan, next day has to go the island

don't envy his job but he says the airmiles he collects are fantastic

Domestic Pier C expansion. In todays SUN, there was a request for expression of Interest. They are set to expand the C pier, which is the Air Canada- Jazz pier. Which was just opened a short time ago. The project involves 14,500 sq meter of new building space, 2,000 sq m of renoavted building space and 5 new air craft gates. The estimated value of construction is 70 million. Construction would commence in June 2008 and be completed in November 2009. So with the completion of the new air side domestic terminal construction, plus this renovation. Only the old B wing will have any resemblance to the original structure built in 1968.

Want to make clear that, the new expansion is set in the adjascent area of the new Jazz gates. Which are a set of G 38 gates. The new addition would be around C40 through c 37.

WRT the new Yellowknife flights, you would be surprised how much travel there is from Vancouver to the north. Don't forget Vancouver is a major mining headquarters as well, and NWT is where a lot of the exploration is. Calgary and Edmonton each have 2 daily flights, so Im sure Vancouver can do one daily, easily. and as someone mentioned earlier, travel to the yukon is HUGE, both cargo and passenger wise. i think this new route is a long time coming, its good to get new domestic routes, even if they arent as glamorous as transpacific flights

I think it's quite long overdue, actually. Note in particular the press release mentions about connections to some Asian flights. Given the huge demand for minerals and raw materials in places like China, this makes a lot of sense.

Incidentally, I noticed that the domestic terminal seems to be going through some renovation/expansion (not the piers, but the facade of the main building facing airside)? Haven't seen any mention of this on the YVR website. Anyone know what this is?

the new addition to the domestic terminal is, like excel said, the new domestic bagroom. it is supposed to be more like the transborder bagroom in that all bags will collect in a central area and be sorted to each airline, rather than each airline having its own belt. but not exactly sure how all that works

the upper stories are going to be expanded airplane viewing areas, plus more shops, restaurants, etc... looks nice from the outside tho. i cant wait to see the airport once this plus the link building are finished. take a look at globalairphotos airport pics, the place definitely looks very substantial now with the expanded international area and this domestic expansion

you should see the thousands of japanese and chinese tourists in Edmonton during the middle of winter to see the lights and to head up to yellowknife.

not sure if this has been posted or not, but that horrible low resolution video screen in the international food court has been replaced by a nice hi-res one. definitely a great improvement, if anyone remembers the old one... uggghhh
