Nice photos SolarWind! I'm not very educated in highrise construction, but I take it those colums rest on top of cassions?

Very unlikely. Those appear to be pretty minor columns that will form part of the large podium. A deep foundation system would only be necessary in highly unusual conditions.

I was wondering, do any cassions support the podium?

none...

There will be only a hotel, condos, and I think some retail or something in Aqua. I'm not even sure if there will be retail or not, if there is it will be under the building or something...

From what I remember, I believe there are plans for a Bed Bath and Beyond, a Walgreens, and a Treasure Island or some other grocery store all with access to the pedway.

Yeah that's what I thought I heard, underneath it as in the pedway... I love Chicago and our vast network of underground streets, pedestrian walk ways, and abandoned freight tunnels!

When was the last time we saw a 3 tower-crane project in Chicago? This is going to be exciting.

Over in the MO thread, we are kicking around the discrepancy between the reported $474 Million figure for Aqua versus the $750M reported for Mandarin Oriental down the street. What are your thoughts on the difference? Does the figure for Aqua sound correct from what you know?
That sounds pretty close or even a tad high.

The whole building sits on caissons including the podium. The podium ones do not go to the bedrock though.

The Treasure Island will be in the market center to be built just north of 340 OTP.

OK, thanks for this info and for the other reply.

I guess I get myself into trouble because I only call foundations caissons if they go to bedrock. I call the others piers or piles, but I should just give it up!

A pile is certainly different than a pier or a caisson (driven vs. drilled), but i always thought that the term "pier" was used for larger drilled shafts and "caisson" was used for smaller drilled shafts. Of course i guess that means that the bigger stuff on Aqua would be called piers and everybody's been calling them caissons so i don't know...

oh, and i think a small portion of the podium will contain Loewenburg's new offices.

Huh... some nice digs for Low-end-burg. I hope anybody coming to visit won't expect such architectural quality as a rule of thumb.

I just got back from Chicago and I have to say that LSE is really gonna kick some ass once it's filled in. I mean like, possibly making a new architectural focal point for the city. That is all.
