As always Delirium, great finds! That last one still blows me away. I was a delegate at the UN World Urban Forum here last year and in one of the large plenary sessions Judy Rogers was telling the "Vancouver Story" TM and showed the before and after photos of downtown to illustrate the transformation of the city since the last time the UN was in town for the original Habitat Fourm in 1976. When the before photo melted into the after the three or four thousand people in the room let out a collective gasp. It was one of those small once-in-a-lifetime moments that you are thoroughly glad to have experienced, the whole conference was like that really. It was pretty surreal to be in a break-out session with half a dozen people whose initial introductions included the Kazakhstan Minister of Economic Development, the President of the UK's Royal Town Planning Commission... it just didn't end. Here are the photos I'm talking about http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/fade/fade.htm

i can't think of anywhere else where this many buildings were built in such a short timeframe and area. i know a lot people complain of the uniformity of our condos but i can't imagine what downtown would look like if there weren't such strict guidelines.
the only one that comes to mind is dubai and quite frankly, i think what they've done —. sure they're tall but from a livability standpoint, it fails terribly - and it's — ugly. i know city council can be — about views and heights and distance between buildings etc but you know what, it's a hell of a lot better than this!
