Just browsing the list on page 1, Abn Amro's planned phase II of their recently built headquarters comes to mind.

With their pending buyout, one must wonder if that proposal will ever see the light of day. I'm going to guess a whopping NO..

it's not a bad building, and it's much better than most of what has been built in the west loop

I really think this proves a point about one of major flaws in current architecture

they left a blank wall, with the excuse that they'd be building something there to cover the blank wall. Now they aren't, this constantly happens in new developments, anticipation of development to come. the blank walls of anticipation and false fronts of parking are the banes of my architectural existence. it is my goal to never make the same mistakes

On another note...this months issue of Chicago has the South Loop development as the cover story. the article didn't really tell me something I didn't know, but it was nice to see some recognition of the tremendous expansioun of the neighborhood.

There was also an ad inside for 600 N Fairbanks...the rendering was old and light bluish???, but it appeared to have a green roof on it.

^ Hey everyone, I have an obscure reference that indicates the parking deck currently on that site is an early design of Helmut Jahn. Can anyone confirm this?

No, I'm not going to wage a preservation battle over a parking deck, but it would be interesting info in any case. I've always thought it was pretty handsome.

No, not really. Just by appearance it looks like a fairly recent rendering and fits SCB's newer designs.

Anyway, I think SamInTheLoop mentioned this a while back, but I also believe the Park Kingsbury project has been cancelled and instead the developer will create lofts inside the Ronsley building. Also, it might be worth checking out to see if the Curve project has been cancelled as well.

Hey, run of the mill is better than a bad tower...

Besides...it reminds me os 1SD an I actually liek that tower for many reasons, despite its run of the mill-ness.

A parking garage is more creative than a generic, but sleek office tower? If you wanted to save a parking garage than you should have tried the Hotel LaSalle one. Otherwise, this is an improvement.

Oh, and did anybody get fouled up in the crane accident/aftermath today?

For those that weren't or don't live in Chicago:

In a scene reminiscent of the latest Spider-Man movie, a construction crane toppled while it was setting up in a Chicago alley, crashing into the top story of a building. It was apparently supposed to lift some HVAC units to the top of the building. The engineers set up the crane, failing to realize that there were hollow vaults beneath the alley whose roofs could not support the weight of the crane above. One gave way, toppling the crane. Nobody was hurt, but the building was evacuated and the nearby Loop tracks were shut down.

For those interested, the crane was in Garland Court, at the center of the block bounded by Michigan Avenue, Madison Street, Wabash Avenue, and Washington Street.

Nothing really architecturally groundbreaking, just one of the ubiquitous 4-5 story jewelers' loft buildings (21 North Wabash). Solid, historic building (built in 1888 according to the city), but not landmark by any means. It looks like the crane actually tore into the mechanical penthouse at the top of the building, so the elevators or HVAC in the building may be out for a few days.

Condo high-rise for South Shore

A 19-story condominium building with townhouses attached is planned for South Shore Drive near Jackson Park and Lake Michigan, the first new high-rise on South Shore's lakefront in decades.

Chicago-based JFJ Development Co. will build the $60 million project through South Shore View LLC.

The entity last August closed on one parcel that constitutes the larger portion of what will be an 0.82-acre site. Two institutional buildings, each two stories, are there. It is under contract to close in July on a smaller parcel, with a two-story residential building, to complete the site, according to Jon Zitzman, head of JFJ. All three buildings will be demolished, Zitzman said.

The Chicago Plan Commission approved the project in April, and it won City Council approval May 9.

On the northwest corner of East 68th Street and South Shore Drive, many units in the high-rise will have views of Lake Michigan and Jackson Park. Others will have city views.

The 19-story building will have 128 condos. Four 3-story townhouses will be attached to the tower and face South Shore Drive, said Lisa Hope Washington, the Chicago Department of Planning and Development project manager who spoke to plan commissioners.

The townhouses will have three bedrooms; the condos will be a mix of one-bedroom, 1 1/2 -bath units to three-bedroom units with dens and 3 1/2 baths. They will range from 800 to 2,000 square feet and be priced from $275,000 to $1.2 million. "We have yet to finalize prices," Zitzman said.

Chicago-based Johnson & Lee and Hartshorne + Plunkard are the architects.

The developer will begin marketing by October from a sales center to open at 71st Street and Oglesby Avenue, Zitzman said. Construction is to begin in February 2008.

^^^ South Shore is one of my favorite Chicago neighborhoods, a real gem of a community with some exuberant turn-of-century (19th, that is) residential buildings. If only it and the rest of the South Side had better El access in addition to the South Shore line.

Nice mix of low, medium & highrise buildings there.
