It is cheesey that Metro is wood, but they do have steel supports on the sides. We were talking before about how we couldn't imagine that wood would be earthquake-safe, but someone explained to me that the steel supports in select areas makes it such.
222 S Main (if ever built) will open up alot more class A space but it will be two years from now. With Fidelity moving over to thier new building at the gateway thus freeing up space and Walker Center being upgraded to class A space this summer, supply should cover demand (I hope). Also the Boston building and (can't remember the name, but the building Olive Garden is in) are being upgraded to class B that should cover the class B needs that are being taken out by Walker going up to class A. But class B and C both still have plenty of vacancy downtown. (Drive around downtown and you'll see For Lease signs everywhere).
We all want to see more towers going up but I really think that (if 222 S. main gets rolling) supply will cover demand for a bit. What we really need is a large company that wants a tower for its corporate headquarters downtown.
I noticed a large number of for lease signs around downtown when I was there last night.
Since we have been talking about how downtown is not getting any new office towers. I found this in the papers today...
"Jordan Gateway center breaks ground Thursday
Jordan Gateway Corporate Center will have a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at 10225 S. Jordan Gateway (450 West).
The project will feature three five-story office buildings totaling more than 225,000 square feet and will include a freestanding retail center.
The first building is scheduled to be completed in November. The project is being developed by Mountain West Capital LLC."
See now this is why downtown is not getting any new office towers. We lose them all to business parks. Three five-story buildings. That could of been a five story building downtown.

Developers say ground will be broken for the office tower July 10, and they expect tenants to start occupying it by June 1, 2009. It is expected to bring 1,600 new workers downtown.
At least they finally settled on a date for ground breaking. Let's hope that it actually starts on time.

5,10,15,20-story. At this point I think I'll take anything. But yea that could of been a 15-story building downtown if we were to stack the three buildings on top of each other.

Speaking of stacking buildings(?), they could have cut the Wells Fargo tower in half and made it twice as tall instead of so wide. That would have been interesting.
For those of you that have never been there, IKEA's are HUGE. My sister is going first day, but I will wait a bit as the crowds will be insane. Can't wait to eat the managers special at the IKEA restaurant!

Beginning this week, construction crews will descend on a four-block stretch of 300 South (Broadway), from Main Street to 400 West to begin adding painted parking islands, landscaped medians, new lights and raised walkways.
Cool project, I would love to do something like this some day, that is build a multi-family housing project with one of the units specifically for me.
I planned on going to art show but was out of town this weekend. It is open again this weekend so I'll see it then.

Well, IKEA opened today. Everyone should check it out at least once in their life. I will be going Saturday with my wife. I'm happy to have access to Swedish foods and candies that I miss.
