grew up in Boston. Went to college in the midwest and haved lived in Madison and Milwaukee before I moved here. I was going to go back home to Boston several years ago just before I moved to Chicago. Flew out, stayed at my parents place and checked out rents. It is just too expensive, didn't want to live in some outer neighborhood or suburb, and eventually I would like to own a condo which again would be out of reach. The odds of me getting a well paying enough job to afford a condo in the center of the city is unlikely. It is all out of reach. I moved here by default. I didn't know were else to go and get all the big city things.
At some point you just don't want roomates in a tiny apartment anymore. So while it all may be fun for a while to live in NYC and the experience would be excellent eventually one tires of the the living conditions and you want more. Now if NYC was much more affordable than it is I would probably be there.
edit:
The only other city I can think of right now that would suit me is Philly. Philly offers everything I like at an affordable price.
