The building is part of the Hayden Ferry-Lakeside development. It's office tower 2, but I don't what the name of it is.

The 22-story Centerpoint tower is topped out. The 30-story tower is at about 6 or 7 floors now and is scheduled to top out at the end of the year. There is talk that the other two 30-story Centerpoint towers could breakground in the next 18 months or so

I don't know if this is what he meant, but I've been harrassed by guards for taking pictures of buildings before. I was taking a picture (at night) of 111 Monroe, and the new lighted facade, and a guard came up and the following happened: ( = me, = security)

It is the current tallest in Tempe. I remember hearing that the 30-story tower would be about 340 ft, but I don't know what the height of the 22-story tower is. Anyone else know?

Should've told him to take a hike. I was all over the Hayden Ferry Lakeside development and didn't see one guard.

Emporis.com has the 22-story tower listed at 258 ft, which is a few feet taller than Summitt at Copper Square. The website has the three 30-story towers listed at 340 feet. Here's the link.

Yeah, the argument that you cannot take a picture of a building is ridiculous. That's his way of making sure he feels powerful whilst being in general a clueless asshole(security guards, like meter maids, are America's fascists). I mean, it's not as if you can't WAIT until he's gone, go and get a picture from some other vantage point, or what have you. What if you were to take a picture of your friend in front of the building? Or, even better, what if you were the ARCHITECT?

I got that at the AZ Center once.
The security guard said "no pictures of the stores".
I told him to call the cops on me and I am pretty sure he did.
I imagine that was a pretty weak conversation
"Yes we've got a gentleman here snapping photographs of the Arizona Center buildings"

He then followed me around for a minute so I purposely took a bunch more pics at my leisure. He then told me I had to leave the premises and I told him that I would as soon as he showed me where in the rule book it states I am not to take pictures.

Then I called him a Fuckhead....

^ Be careful, guys. Private property owners CAN and DO restrict photography while you are on their property. There is a thread in the general photography subforum with a flier written by an attorney:

If you are asked to stop taking photos on private property, you must do so. If they ask you to leave, you must comply or you can be arrested for trespassing.

I'm not saying they're right - they are twats for restricting photos - but one of the "bundle of sticks" you get as a property owner (like Arizona Center) is to control access to your property.

Now, if you are standing on a public sidewalk or street, they can't stop you from taking photos.

I of course have had more run-ins with overzealous security nimwits over the years than anyone I know. From the nazified flight attendant on Southwest Airlines who called security to meet us when the plane landed in Las Vegas (because I was taking photos out the window below 10,000 feet during the take-off/landing sequence - not to mention the fact I told her to "get over it") to being hassled by the ASU police while taking photos sitting on a bench on one of the public commons (I was accused of "surreptitious photographing" while using a camera and telephoto lens the size of a toaster - yeah, really subtle spying there), I've had more than my share, and yes, I'm usually less than pleasant with badge-heavy people who don't know the law.

I agree on the issue of private property. As long as you guys are standing on the sidewalk taking photos of the building, you are okay. Never give out your name and number (HooverDam, the last thing you want to do is to give a stupid security guard your name and number). Stay on public property, and know your photographer's rights. That said, we are all going to get hassled one way or the other.

The problem is these rent a cops just have nothing better to do. We had a big VW meet on the roof of AZ centers garage one night to take pictures. There were about 20 cars there and the guard came up in his little mountie hat and told us to stop. long story short we were there about an hour and the guy ended up in a lot of the pictures trying to get in the way to ruin them. HA

I just had to say ah, the memories, to your "bundle of sticks" quote (land use law was probably one of the better classes I've ever had at ASU, almost enough to make me want to be a lawyer....) and also wanted to point out that ASU's security has probably been a little jumpy about photographers since the palmwalk.com debacle, in which some wierdo took pictures of the cuties walking down the mall at ASU and posted a bunch of pictures online. I remember the stink in the State Press about it. Not sure how long ago it was though.

Those incidents still blow my mind. I take photos at takeoff and landing every time I fly, and I've never had a problem. I also never had problems at ASU (or here at UCI, or any other time I've taken pictures at a university).

I guess I somehow look less suspicious than you do, which I really don't understand now that I have long hair.
