I see what you are saying, but regardless of provenance, the existing PL adds so much street level appeal to DT. I would be less upset if the structures replacing PL were particularly good, but they aren't. They are disastrous.
I hate the fact that they are appropriating the name "Penny Lane" for that abomination that is to be erected.

Its going to be interesting to see this thing get salvaged as it is being removed. Hopefully the construction will be worth all this. I'm sure the towers will look much better in person than what is shown in that rendering.

Speaking of which It gives me some more time to make a final visit to both Cowboys and Mynt someday.
From my experience, I never found Penny Lane mall to be that busy. It was always quiet with nobody in sight. Only traffic is the area around Ceilis where people always go to.

Belgo I heard was very expensive but then again I only had samples during the taste of calgary fest.

Unfortunately, even if they do keep the trees the excavation will do irreversible damage to the root system, which will usually end up killing the trees in the long run anyways.

Speaking of trees, the condition of the elms along stephan avenue has degraded considerably over the last number of years. Hopefully, the city gets around to replacing the trees sometime soon.

I too will miss Ceilis, nothing like the rooftop on warm summer night! Back in the day I was there every monday for cheap wings....oh the days!

Sucks to be the Mynt, it is wone of the nicer places downtown, I wonder if they will re-locate

I totally agree. You can't just create that kind of character overnight, it's something that evolves. You'll never re-create the street presence the place had on 8th. I really believe the old structures could have been incorporated at least somewhat into the new structure.

And by putting up a tribute to the old Penny Lane a la Eatons Centre: that so Calgary!

Well, some of us might want the opportunity to respond to the development permit application. For those of us out of town who can't go down to City Hall to look at the application itself, architectural renderings or plans are the only way one would be able to respond.

It is a billion dollar major project, the public has the right to be able to see and respond to such plans.

Keynote looks the way it does because of Balboa. Jamieson and Livingston look the way they do because of Bentall.

Yeah, I've met them both through the Beltline. I find Vince Dodds quite personable, and quite a good architect. He presented Palliser South to us, which I think is a pretty innovative design for the site.

Not the best experiences with either Gibbs or Gage on projects like the Calgary Board of Education project, 999 or Keynote. Not at all receptive to constructive critique. When they presented the original 999 project, I couldn't believe they said some of the things they did about the design with a straight face. I mean, what the fuck is that? They can't blame the client, it was the same one as Centrium!

I wonder who within the firm designed Centrium - far and away their best project.

I find Jamieson to be a good design. Can't say that about Livingston.

Heh, the 999 presentation was quite amusing. Half of the people in the room (or more) were snickering and laughing under their breath while the presentation rolled on. It was just so ridiculous, from the "attractive" barn look to the red sandstone (from Utah) and gold-ish glass.

The Sandcrawler presentation was good, I agree. It's too bad that so far Aspen seems to be fumbling the ball with their projects.
