The Director of the Mendel Art Gallery says its 18 million dollar expansion project is back on track and should meet its 2008 construction startup date.
Terry Graf says the gallery's architects are working to have the design plans completed by the end of the year to allow the tendering process to begin. Graf says that will allow plans for construction in 2008 to take place as scheduled. He says any deviation from the time line could mean an increase in construction costs that could leave the gallery with a shortfall in funding.
The City has committed 4.5 million dollars to the project, the province has indicated it will match that amount, and the gallery is also applying for funding through Heritage Canada's cultural spaces grant program. In addition the Mendel is running its own campaign Expanding the Vision, to raise funds from the private sector.
Once completed the Gallery will have an additional 60, 600 square feet of exhibition, storage and administration space.
