perhaps they're making surface parking cuz a big development is taking the place of the lot on 22nd
The report posted by Hawker makes mention of some parking to increase "market dominance". Nice. More parking AND dominance. Today downtown Saskatoon, tomorrow, the world.

Native Student Space Building

Has anyone heard about this building before? Looks beautiful, so I hope it gets built. I am biased, I admit... Douglas Cardinal is one of my favourite architects.

Wow, that looks great, and I think it's about time there was a more obvious focus on Aboriginal Studies at the University. I certainly hope it is being built.

Mendel Art Gallery Project Back On Track

Written by Jim Mattern - 600 Action News-Local First
Thursday, 29 March 2007

The Director of the Mendel Art Gallery says its 18 million dollar expansion project is back on track and should meet its 2008 construction startup date.

Terry Graf says the gallery's architects are working to have the design plans completed by the end of the year to allow the tendering process to begin. Graf says that will allow plans for construction in 2008 to take place as scheduled. He says any deviation from the time line could mean an increase in construction costs that could leave the gallery with a shortfall in funding.

The City has committed 4.5 million dollars to the project, the province has indicated it will match that amount, and the gallery is also applying for funding through Heritage Canada's cultural spaces grant program. In addition the Mendel is running its own campaign Expanding the Vision, to raise funds from the private sector.

Once completed the Gallery will have an additional 60, 600 square feet of exhibition, storage and administration space.

I'm not making this up

Demolition of Midtown Village is scheduled for next week. The good news is that the eyesore will come down. Bad news is that Midtown's converting the space into more surface parking.

at least we're getting a "striking new entrance" out of it... plus the expansion to the mall of course, and general clean up of the area

I heard some talk about Ken Achs purchasing the 2nd Avenue Lofts building from the current developer. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If so, maybe that phantom fifth floor will actually happen. Also, I heard something about him putting up a new development on 24th and Spadina. Have you guys heard anything about this one?

24th and Spandina? That's a church on one side and the new Riverfront condo on the other. Where would a new development go?

U of S Cardinal Project

Last I heard, the Douglas Cardinal project is a "go". I believe he will be in town at the start of July speaking at the CEFP conference. I agree that it is a gorgeous building & I hope it gets built.

Xtratime Sports has demolished their 2nd ave building and have plans to construct a replacement on the old site. Not sure what they have planned for size or design.

Just heard on the news that Maple Leaf wishes to build a $40 million distribution center(retains 90 jobs) in the North Industrial. The existing Maple Leaf processing plant will continue operating until 2009, followed by the city purchasing the land and clearing the property to make way for a re-aligned south bridge and completed circle drive(finally!). This agreement hinges upon a meeting this Monday where approval must be granted by council.

I can't see any objections to the land purchase agreement. As for the re-alignment, Montgomery residents should be satisfied; but Meadow Green resident may have an arguement against it, as was the case last time. Residents will have to reserve judgement to wait and see what comprimise(s) the City and Stantec deliver.

Seems like you know the most out of all of us Thrill Seeker.. just what other murmurings can you report on? Midtown Village redevelopment and now a rumored Ken Achs project!.. you're quickly becoming our inside man! Allow me to promote you to "Assistant Regional Manager" ..we'll drop the "to the"

Spring is in the air my friends... I can sense a season of new development announcements and construction approaching us (my fingers are crossed anyways)

There's still the parking lot between the Ukranian Museum and the Partktown. It's rather narrow, but I suppose something could go in there.

Hi all! Cheers from Alberta! Have been more & more interested in Saskatoon since I first started having to do some business there over the last couple years. A very beautiful city with much potential. Congrats on all the exciting developments.
I actually invested in the 2nd Ave lofts myself since my last visit a month ago. What has been the 'talk' about the project over the last while? I know that two years ago it was still in that 'development/construction' stage as it is today. Any idea why it has taken so long?? What is your opinion on this project and it's effect on the downtown core??By the way, who is Ken Achs??
Sorry for all the questions!! Just want to learn more about the project.

Real estate players in Saskatoon

For that matter, who is Ellen Remai? Having grown up in Saskatoon, I'm more than familiar with the Radisson towers downtown (I still tend to call them the Renaissance) and I've heard her name splashed around over the years, but I'm not sure where she came from or why she's so prominent, apart from having lots of money to spread around.

Saturday's SP said she's dropping another $1.5M on Persephone Theatre, and had a one-line backgrounder saying she and her late husband made their fortune in realestate. End of story? Any more interesting details about her?
