The radio news said that they are going to close granville and pender this week in preparation for removing the TBM at Waterfront.

Scavenging from flickr - I am (wisely) avoiding Cambie street like the plague, so I don't really know how bad it is....

Yes, I saw that. My comment was in response to Nutterbug, the post directly above but on the previous page. Sorry for the confusion. I will try to quote in future.

This is very common for European based companies. Sure beats making 12 versions of the same thing when you wanna sell to all of Europe.

I don't think Canada should promote it. I think it should just take a laissez faire attitude towards it without supporting or encouraging the use of other languages or practice of other cultures in any way, in particular, in its public services.

In any case, democracy should be the ultimate decider on these things.

Fair enough,
But I can see where most people are trying to get at. For the long term stability of Canada, I personally think it's safe to implement different languages to cater to our diverse community. My mom is personally worried about taking the skytrain because unfortunately, she had a hard time learning english despite attending classes frequently when we first immigrated here. I'm sure many of the forumer's parents can relate to this too, so by having different languages on the skytrain, ridership will most likely increase as a result. At the same time, it will also be good for tourism.

Search it up and read on it before any of you argue that you(most likely young when you immigrated to Canada) had to learn a new language so why is it an exception for others. However, the thing I don't understand is why there is so much negativity with implementing other languages in the skytrain? Doesn't Canada promote multiculturalism?
I know what you are saying but its completly meaningles...if someone who is older can decide to uproot their life and move to Canada then they sure as hell should be prepared to learn the language no mater how hard its is in their age. My grandparents came here to stay for a year in their late 70's and in that time they learned enough english to be able to get by, go shoping and get around. My parents came here in their 40's and both learned enough english to function perfectly fine within a year or two as any other Canadian(much slower then me and my brothers but they still learned it), though they did have a 6 month head start by self teaching them selfs of childrens disney books and other english books which they would translate etc. before they came here. Im sorry if some might find it a bit offensive when i say its extremly disrespectfull for people to come here and have almost no motivation to learn the language. i mean I uderstand that for some cultures there is less of a need because there are enough people speaking their own language within some comunities for them to be able to live a almost normal isolated life with out needing to ever learn english but its wrong...dosent mater how old you are. Seriously i dont see why Canada gives citizenships to people who have lived here for 3 years and shown that they dont care about learning the language...i would boot them back out of the country imediatly and i dont think that would be to harsh because again there is no excuse for anyone no mater the age to not learn enough english in 3 years to be able to function without your native language. So back to the Canada line i dont think they should make anouncments in any other language but english, this is so not learning english isnt incouraged and people who refuse to learn by their own choice arent acomodated.

Absolutely sweet pics. I'm always amazed at how fast the C line is coming along. It feels like it was just yesterday that Translink voted down the project.

I remember when Translink voted then RAV down the first time..there was a lady in the audience (gallery whatever it's called) that erupted with orgasmic joy when the defeat was announced. I always wondered how anyone could not be in favour of this project.

Something tells me that lady probably isn't reading this thread along with the rest of us.

I should add that I wanted to reach into my TV and strangle her

Perhaps because of the high price tag due to the Cambie NIMBY's who forced it underground?

I could never wrap my head around why so many people were against RAV either, talk about lack of foresight. I honestly believe that some people are truly afraid of Vancouver becoming a big city. Whether it be immigration, RAV , tall towers downtown or the gateway project, they want none of it.

I'm not the only Cambie resident who's in favour of the line I know quite a few people who are annoyed at the construction, but know that it will be good once it's done.

True enough... but a tree doesn't grow its branches until it has grown its trunk.

This "trunk" couldn't be above ground?
