Yes, they're to hardpan. I don't know what the maximum load hardpan caissons can hold. Maybe they could add a little, but we have no reason to believe that they will at this point.

I guess they can probably go higher with steel than with concrete on hardpan caissons.

Someone can maybe clarify this more.

Concerning the success of this building, sure, I'd love to have it grow by ten or 15 stories! But, if this can't happen, every bit of good news for 300 makes Hines's next project at the old Levy Site near Riverbend more realistic. Either way, we have something important to look forward to.

I like this building's proportions the way they are. I'm not sure I'd like it taller.

So are they next gonna excavate around the core like they did across the river at Waterview?

Very nice looking building. I took a look at the architects website and they have some pretty nice examples. I think the biggest thing about this building whichyou guys will like will be its curtainwall design and the level of detail and complexity. Because it is going for LEEDS the attnetion will be towards the way they designed their sunshades/louvres to interact and relation with the regular curtainwall frame. These louvres may also be that of vertical fins acting as false mullions to give an impression that there are more windows than what appears to be. The renderings show some clues, and its impressive.
Anyhow that is all I know about so called "trademarks" that firm uses, oh and also curved facades which curves inwards at the roofs. The best example that I found is thru their Peachtree tower in Atlanta which they also did.

The construction of this is most interesting, it seems the core is underway but there is like no excavation for the floors yet. That building section drawing shows a parkade underneath, so why havent they started digging yet? It also appears that it will have steel columns to support the floors which itself will probably be steel framed.

Anyhow, great project and I think it is a wicked addition to Chicago skyline. Many times I mistake this for the 1000' waterview tower. Now to get Norman Foster to do something here too

Again, the way this building will be constructed will be similar to the construction of Waterview, they will dig after they work on the core. However, unlike Waterview, they will keep working on the core as they dig and then the steel workers will catch up after they finish excavating. I believe the reason for this is again space (as is the reason for Waterview), once they get the equipment working on the core up off the ground and out of the way, then they will have room to dig and put of steel.

Saw the cement pumpers out there on Friday - looks like they've poured another level so the self-climbing form should rise another level next week. This may put the core above the pavement on Lasalle St.

This afternoon I noticed excavation taking place on the site's westside near the Helene Curtis building. Looks like they're ready to start digging around the core.

I was told that excavation would be starting this week, so I guess that today was the day.

I was also told that they will need to take roughly 2,000 truck loads of excavated material from the site.

Retention work, as shown in the photos, has begun. The general contractor intends to have this entire site excavated in 5 weeks. This is an ambitious proposition to say the least. These guys are going to work 7 days a week until its done (thank god i dont work for them).
Tentatively, the south tower crane will be erected first. The plan is to use a triple 9 (a MASSIVE crawler crane) on a barge for assembly. This seems like an insane thing to do, but i guess its been done before. The river will likely be closed during dangerous picks.
It should be fun to watch... from a safe distance

I'm so excited about 300 and Waterview going vertical. Watching them both almost daily for a year has been an emotional roller coaster. From excitement to impatience to ambivalence to acceptance to recently renewed excitement. I think this process will make the coming months that much more rewarding.
