I think you're right, although I can't imagine why they're keeping the cruddy little 2-story building that Pat's is currently in. But over the last few days I noticed they boarded up at least one of the loading bays in the front of the ten-story building. I wonder if they're going to keep curb-cuts and loading on Clark, or make do with mid-block alley access--that could be an ugly scene around semester's end, either way.

Yeah. I doubt they will keep the Pat's Pizza building, but the Dwight Building will be kept. If they tore it down, Michael Clark would miss it.

I think I remember reading a few months ago that the 2-story building would be torn down and that Pat's Pizza would move in next door, into the Dwight Building.

The site was quiet on the day I took these pictures (3/17/07). I heard them pile-driving a few weeks back so I think it's officially under construction. Dan, if you can use these pics for Emporis, feel free.

BUCK BEAT: Maybe this will be the last spring to enjoy the plaza next to the American Medical Association building at 515 N. State. Developer John Buck Co. has filed zoning plans for a building of about 40 stories on that plaza at 505 N. State. The proposal calls for 261 boutique hotel rooms and 121 condos, plus parking for 121 cars.

Buck principals declined to comment. But last year, they said they had formed a partnership with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. to introduce a hotel flag called aloft (yes, all in lower case) at the River North site and elsewhere in the Chicago area.

The zoning application said Buck's State Street venture is a partnership with the landowner, Champaign-based Royal Properties. Royal invests in student housing, but a source said that isn't a part of the State Street project.

Buck wants to change the zoning that allowed a 22-story, 454,000-square-foot office building on the plaza. The new plan involves a taller and thinner building and is just one of many decisions that will land in the lap of downtown's incoming alderman, Brendan Reilly.

The glass on 600 Fairbanks looks amazing. I wish we could get as many high profile Jahn designs as we do SCB, though I'll still take any good looking building.

Wow, awesome pics! Pherek - the site directly north of Astoria Tower is 1 East 8th....it will be a 10-story building primarily of condos, but 3 stories are reserved for an X-Sport and I believe there will be a decent amount of other retail as well.

I agree. 600 North Fairbanks is going to look like a gem when finished at this rate.

Actually, it will be mostly parking. The condos cover up a parking garage, kinda like on the Fairbanks. This way, Astoria doesn't need a parking podium. It's a really cool idea that preserves the streetscape.
