Yeah, they tore down Buildings 1, 2 and 4 because they were built back when Sony first set up production in San Diego. Their lease was also up and CRT production stopped anyway. Since Sony moved their headquarters to San Diego, they are going to build new facilities in place of the old ones to move more operations here.

There are still 4 major sony buildings in RB. The Pointe, which is the one you can see from I-15, Building Seven (which is currently the best-looking sony building), and Building 3 & 5 which house a lot of manufacturing and service business.

I've been hoping for that forever, but since they have a lot of actual Electronics business here, I don't think they could find a Building that has the floor-space to support that. I think that's why a lot of the major companies in San Diego ARENT downtown. It's unfortunate because if more business was forced to be concentrated downtown, we'd have a lot more commercial demand and possibly a lot more tall office buildings going up. From what I understand, though, major industries here are tech and bio-tech, which need horizontally expansive facilities and labs, which vertical floor space cant really accomodate.

I'm just guessing here. Correct me if I am wrong.

I know, it would. They could lease an entire building, I am sure. The entertainment side of Sony has an entire building in New York. There's no reason why Sony Electronics couldn't do the same thing in San Diego. Hypothetically of course.

Yep. Sony Electronics has had a major presense here in SD for many years, but I think it was in 2005 that they switched their official headquarters from some crappy place in New Jersey to here in beautiful San Diego.

Let us all share our favorite San Diego building. Mine has to be the El Cortez, it is one of the finest examples of the Spanish Colonial Revival Period.
