I didn't mean the design, I meant what is actually going to be occupying it.

oh. i have it listed as "residential" on page 1, but that's just the default setting. so there's a mystery as to whether this one will be condo, hotel, or some combination thereof?

Immediately west of the old post office is a fairly busy Holiday Inn on the Harrison side and the Congress Center building on the Van Buren side (525 W Van Buren) - 16 stories and built in 2000.

The Department of Zoning lists the old post office as 404 West Harrison St. The odd numbered addresses on this block of Van Buren puts them on the south side of the street - on the old post office site.

1890 maple is slated to replace an incredibly non-descript 2 story commercial office building that's been vacant for years and really kinda kills the corner.

carroll gardens is slated to replace a vacant lot that's been vacant for as long as i can remember.

Last I heard and saw Pepper Construction was the CM on this project and this pic I think is actually the Clearwater Development in Oakbrook being developed by John Buck Co

no, you are incorrect, the rendering in my post that you quoted is a pic of the 1890 maple street proposal in evanston. the image is clearly an aerial view of the northwestern corner of downtown evanston; the 28 story optima condo tower views can be very easily discerned of the extreme left of the image.

Jaraslaw created and posted the development map that you are referring to. I PM'd it to you. It's way too big to post.

Illegal parking on Loop street to be cleared for pedestrians

March 7, 2007
BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter
A South Loop street that has served as a haven for illegal parking will be converted into a pedestrian walkway, under a plan advanced Tuesday to create a security bubble around an expanded federal courthouse and office complex.
At the request of the U.S. General Services Administration, the City Council's Transportation Committee agreed to vacate West Quincy Street between State Street and the plaza that surrounds the Dirksen federal building. A T-shaped alley in the area bounded by Adams, Jackson, State and Dearborn will also be closed to traffic.

The GSA has unveiled a long-term plan to build up to 1.5 million square feet of new office space on newly acquired land in the 200 block of South State Street. The $550 million project -- the first expansion of the federal campus in nearly 15 years -- may include demolition of existing buildings, or a mix of new construction and remodeling.
Until the expansion plan is finalized and funding is secured, the GSA is looking to create a security buffer around the federal building complex. All of the property bounded by State, Adams, Dearborn and Jackson is owned by the federal government -- with the exception of Quincy Street, the T-shaped alley and the landmark Berghoff Restaurant.

Solar screening, seating
"Quincy . . . functions essentially as a place for illegal parking. At any time, there can be up to a dozen cars and trucks. They appear to be people who have found a little space to provide their own free parking. There appears to be very little enforcement," said J. David Hood, the GSA's assistant regional administrator.
"It's nonaesthetic. It interferes with pedestrian use of the space. It's unlawful and it's not secure. We prefer to have some notion of who is close to our buildings at all times."

Motorists' loss will be pedestrians' gain.

"We plan to put solar screening, shading, seating, lighting and new surface treatments to make it a much more friendly pedestrian space than it is today," Hood said.

Hood stressed the federal government plans to build around the Berghoff.

"We have no intention whatsoever to acquire the Berghoff Restaurant. We have entered into a formal memorandum of agreement with the Berghoff under which we will convey to them an easement in perpetuity for access to their property after the street and alley are vacated to federal control," he said.

Transportation Committee Chairman Tom Allen noted that private developers are required to compensate the city when streets and alleys are closed to traffic, but government agencies aren't.

"It's the federal government, so you can have whatever you want. No compensation," Allen said.

There is now a crane on the 351 N Clark site, and the previously mentioned drilling rig is now upright and moved from where it was previously sitting. I didn't see any drill bits or casings on site though.

None today, I've been too busy this week to even go out for lunch. Perhaps tomorrow, but it won't be a massive update. Anything in particular you'd like to see? I'm taking requests.

Sure, that's right near me. Yes, it's starting to rise, but hasn't quite made it up to street level yet.

Not directed to you, SolarWind, but it would be nice to see someone take photo updates of West Gate, imo. No highrises, but it really is an impressive amount of midrises going up all over the place. Give this place another 5 years, it will become one of the most vibrant in the city. I

Always a fan of the streeterville towers...all in close proximity with each other.
