Freaking awesome pics.... it inspired me to wander over to wikipedia to find out more about the city, and I found this. Seems to be appropriate... from the 1870's:

BEAUTIFUL city. I really like the cityscape with all the greenery, freeways, bridges, skyscrapers, and of course the lovely orange roofs.

Instanbul is a great city with an amazing amount of history. Density although is an understatement! My father in law talks of growing up there when his family had a house in the city. It is now an apartment building, which his family still owns, in the middle of a thousand other apartment buildings. Its hard to imagine houses with yards ever in the city.

the historcial districts are very dense
but there are also distrcits with some green and space

you can see the 3 Skyscraper Districts (Sisli, Levent and Maslak)

actuall till the 1940s ( 685 BC - 1940s AC) the city was located at the historical peninsula


i hope you can recognize the historcial peninsula in this pic



But the first human settlement in Istanbul was in the asian side (5500-3500 BC)
