I'm hoping this prediction of a flight to quality will hold in other aspects as well - design, construction, etc...
My worry with alot of the planned towers is that the site will get bulldozed, then the construction deal falls through so the end result being we've lost some structures with historic value to be replaced with a surface lot for the forseeable future.....the story of so much of Chicago from the 60s until now.

Why are so many developers so interested in tearing down historic buildings?! There are SO many 60's and 70's SHIT boxes to tear down! I wish Chicago had as much respect for its history as cities like Boston do.

sorry about the confusion, first I got my directions mixed up, then I thought it was going to be a new building (wasn't sure where they were going to put it around there) but I guess it's just another possible conversion. thanks for setting me straight, not sure what i was thinking

It actually will be a new building. There is just enough space on that site to put up a pencil-thin 'addition' next to the Doral. This might be the slenderest tower to go up in the city in ages, and is another reason people are excited about next Monday.

At the same time, places like Boston do not have quite as much of a boom. You take the good with the bad

And before we take down those "shit boxes" (which house lots of people and makeup a lot of the skyline), get rid of all the vacant parcels first.

Newcityskyline had some images of the building, but nothing that would give its full impact.

It appears to me that there also has been a shift in the market toward modern designs. There hasn't been a major PoMo one built since Millennium Center. Or am I making this up?
Have we forgotten about the Elysian?

Ugh, you're right.... I had almost pushed it from my memory. And the Columbian too, as you show. (But neither of these buildings are the worst offenders....)

On a brighter note, the Pittsfield Building is finally being lit at the top, as discussed during the landmark designation. It looks fantastic!! I hope everyone gets a chance to see it at night sometime soon.

Hopefully, they aren't finished yet, since the sloped roof isn't lit yet. But it's just great to see this building celebrated.

Dude, vacant parcels yeah... I'm talking about when developers want to replace old, historic buildings for ugly, cheap condos. I'm saying, build on vacant lots before anything else. And if it means tearing something down, then tear down all of the crap that was built in the late 50's to 80's.

But my point about Boston was that I wish Chicago had more value for its historic structures not just now, but back in the 50's and 60's and so on.

Isn't the Doral on the North East Corner of Randolph and Michigan Ave? Are they tearing down the Doral? Or is there room between the Doral and the prudential building?

dylan is currently working on the old SSP image server, and until that work is done, all of the older images hosted on it will not be showing up. he says the work will take at least several weeks, but i suspect it will likely be longer.

Is that rusty steel? Is that bad for the long-term stability of those concrete columns?

Yeah, tear them down just in time for people to get nostalgic about them.

Thanx for the pics ChiShawn, The Columbian looks great. I know it sounds redundant because so many forumers feel the same way, but that south end of Grant Park is gonna be incredible in a few more years. (OMP, OMPW, two more in Central Station, Columbian & more) I cant wait. Well done, and thanks to all the forumers who keep the photos rolling, especially for us non-Chicagoans. Keep em comming.

Oh....I think you're right. We suspected that the Beitler tower was merely a negotiation tactic anyhow. Hmmm...another tall cluster in the making.

Lake Point Tower's views just keep getting better and better.
