As far as I know the Southern Family owns both Spruce Meadows and Atco.

I think I mis-spoke when I said Southam. It's the Southern family that controls ATCO, I believe. They are rather well-tied into the Calgary ethos, so I'd be interested to see what scraps they'd let Edmonton get.

Regarding Atco, watch for a Devonian- style renovation of the Milner Building (just to the east of Atco, connected by a pedway across the alley) There is available space there but the building itself is in horrible shape... Atco has interest in the Milner Building but it will require new mechanicals to replace the extremely inefficient the 100% outdoor air ventilation system and the nasty two-pipe heating/cooling switchover system, the circa 1950's boilers and the rotten cooling tower, as well as all the compartmentals, electrical, fire alarm, the elevators will need to be retrofitted and all the floor space needs to be re-finished as most of it is not very nice. The building will also need a top-to-bottom asbestos abatement, and I wouldn't be suprised to see a new lobby and building envellope too.

Yes, you are right about that. While it is true that the corporate offices for the ATCO Group are based out of Calgary, ATCO Gas, ATCO Electric, and ATCO I-Tek are Headquartered out of Edmonton. Further to this, almost all ATCO companies have a presence in the city (i.e. ATCO Travel, ATCO Pipelines, ATCO Frontec, etc, etc, etc.)

Yes, I heard that a company from Toronto bought the Milner Building (as well as a couple other older downtown office buildings), with plans to upgrade the office space. While an envelope reno is probably in order, I'm not sure it will be along the same lines the Devonian (new designed curtainwall), or at least I hope not. They will probably run-up against the city preservationists, as the building is one of edmonton's first modern "skyscrapers" (1958). I'm not sure if it is on the city's A-list for historic preservation, but it has a lot of distinctly modernist features and nice materials which give it a pretty important place in Edmonton's architectural history.

In this tight labour market, wouldn't it just be easier to swing a wrecking ball at that thing, if it requires that much specialized work?
