The list starts in 1999 because that's when 1 Superior Place was completed. It was the first 500+ foot tower built in Chicago in many years and it signaled the return of large amounts of highrise construction to the city of Chicago after a bit of a hiatus during the mid 1990’s. Click on the individual building names to be taken to the corresponding Emporis building page to learn more and see pics/renderings. You can also click on the word “website” at the end of each building entry line in the list to be taken to the official project website to learn even more and for developer/marketing contact information.

The buildings are ranked according to the structural height per the guidelines of Emporis. Where no roof height is listed, it is either unknown or the structural height and the roof height are one and the same.

* - The information for the proposed towers may not be entirely accurate, but it's the best that we have to go on for now. Also keep in mind that there are many more “loosely proposed” towers in the Lake Shore East, Central Station, and River East mega projects that are not included here. This list only contains proposed towers that have been given individual names and designs as opposed to theoretical future towers that exist only as generic ideas within the context of master plans.

** - Blue Cross-Blue Shield is an existing office tower that currently stands 411 ft./32 floors tall. The tower was designed to accommodate a significant vertical addition. Current plans call for a 25 story addition which would take the tower to a total of 57 floors.

^ thanks for the props guys, but as HK alluded to, it's the collaborative effort of all the regulars of this thread that make it as great as it is. this dumb little list i keep track of would be absolutely nothing without out all of the eyes and ears and camera lenses out there on the street providing the info to keep this train rolling.

we are coming up on an anniversery for this thread, it was january of 03' when i put the very first chicago highrise compilation list together. of course, compared with what this list has evolved into, the very first incarnation was quite pared down. it only included buildings over 400' and had no images or embedded links or fancy colors or any suburban info, etc., but it was the very first step of what eventually became the construction list you see above nearly 4 years later. it's been a fun ride so far, let's hope the good times keep on rolling.

that's gonna be a mighty big change for that decidely lowrise part of town. you gotta love TOD like this. it gives one a tiny bit of hope that maybe, just maybe chicago is finally pulling its head out of its collective ass in regards to building densely around our existing transit infrastructure. cities like toronto have been on top of this game for decades now.

Well I was remiss in not explicitly mentioning your greatness... all the news and photo superstars get props after each post, so you deserve some straight up man love from anyone who posts here.

The Irving Park condo looks like a good development, but I believe the latest trend of "Ralph Johnson Wannabe" roof embellishments generally suck.

I second that. The rundown page is such a usefull reference for this boom, which has gotten to big to keep on top of everything. I mean come on, 117 buildings completed, 45 more U/C, and more than 100 more in the works. I never thought this magnitude would even be possibile a few years ago. What an age we are living in folks.

Btw, Steely, would it be possibile to add this boom rundown as a sticky at SSC? I would really love a backup page available when SSP is down.

The collective efforts of Steely and many others make this place the most informative and up to date collection of info on Chicago development, bar none. And to think even a few years ago, without ssp, this would not have been possible at all. I remember way back in 2000 Tom in Chicago was doing a dedicated website with Chicago construction updates, and then I think in 2001 a "Chicago news" thread started up here on ssp... and for three years now we've had a thread worthy of the boom.

i could post all the renderings over there, but because the formating tags used to get the list to appear the way it does are specific to SSP, i'm afraid the list would be quite illegible if i were to post it over at SSC.

Over the past few days or so, they have been taking apart the sales office on the Burnham Pointe site. They also have a yellow tape up, blocking the entrance to the parking lot. I wouldn't be surprised if prep-work on this site starts sometime in the next week or two....

Yeah, it has the same effect on me too sometimes.

If you want to ENHANCE that effect I recommend visiting other cities boom compilations first THEN come to the Chicago boom rundown, trust me the sheer joy of seeing what we got coming and what they don't, will make anyones day.
