I'd use certain routes more if they weren't stuck in traffic most of the way... hence the lanes.

But essentially they weren't stuck in traffic. Maybe at intersections where people ahead of the bus were waiting for pedestrians before turning right but that sill happens. They should have just barred street parking which would have had the same effect. One thing I've wondered, why do taxis and Ubers use these lanes? The sign says bus and bike (snicker) only.

I hope we get automated bus lane enforcement some day soon to resolve all of these issues.

Yes, that's what bus lanes are usually for. Much simpler and more effective than banning right turns.

If we had modern light controllers, they could notice that a backlog of right turns was holding back a bus, and insert a right turn phase without a pedestrian phase, to clear it and let the bus pass.

Much cheaper than bus lanes that even with enforcement would be blocked all too often.

Well, except for the fact that cars are allowed to turn right from a bus lane that runs next to the right hand curb (see: page 53 of the BC Learn to Drive Smart guide). So a bus lane doesn't solve the right turn problem unless it's not the rightmost lane, something that you don't generally see.

From my anecdotal driving around the region, CoV does a much better job than other jurisdictions on light timing. Some of the other places you routinely wait forever at lights with nobody going the other direction.

And yet, the city was out talking about how just informing the antiquated timing system with data gathered by google would improve things by a lot.

Increasing that flexibility even more would be good. Too often we have 6 lane roads that effectively are 2 lane roads because of limited intersection designs and an unwillingness to change long standing patterns.

I keep forgetting to post this. I met a friend at Farmers Apprentice during the summer and noticed that they had resurfaced that block of West 6th with concrete paving to match the original. Is that usual? It's not exactly a high traffic road, I would have thought this would be a lot more expensive. Why not just dump garvel and pave over it? The server said there had been a ton of workers doing it.

What will the chattering classes at City Hall say? Those idiotic residnets not knowing what's best for them...

Calm or chaos? East Vancouver residents sick of traffic barriers
By Cecilia Hua
Posted September 22, 2026 11:35 am.

For anyone driving in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, it doesn’t take long to come across a concrete barrier blocking a road.

Traffic calming measures such as those were installed as part of the City of Vancouver’s neighbourhood traffic management program, intended to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

“It’s a combination of many more turns and many more blocks,” said local Tom Siracusa...

...He pointed to a recent example of a vehicle being forced to go down an alley because it wasn’t able to go anywhere else.....

...A petition calling on the city to remove the barriers has garnered more than 2,000 signatures.

“We’ve been affected by these changes, and we’re sending a message to the city that we want our neighbourhood back,” Stanborough said.

“More importantly, we don’t want to be barricaded.”...

The City likely wouldn't have done anything, had residents not complained about traffic needing to be calmed... and so they calmed it.

I wouldn't necessarily call traffic engineers the "chattering classes".

Jokes aside the City spent lots of time speaking with residents about areas identified to stop short cutting - something that is quite common in Vancouver and I think this likely would not have been such a huge issue if it was permanent, like the St. George Rainway or the various plazas we have, West End parklets.

Now there was no budget for permanent infrastructure and this was more-or-less an interim or pilot solution. I assume the business would have been quite happy if the road closure in front of them allowed seating and more of a plaza atmosphere similarly to Main and 14th or Woodland Dr bridge.

Highly recommend a good chill on the bridge at sunset

This is actually insane to see, as this neighbourhood was screaming out for these changes for years!

Nice, great to see this finally coming together, they are well behind schedule.

Douglas will be closed at the rail line, the two lane bridge is fine for Still Creek traffic.

Thanks.

Douglas Road will be permanently closed at the railway tracks.
So the 2 lane bridge over Still Creek will just lead to a dead end.
The route from Canada Way to Lougheed Hwy via Douglas Road will be eliminated.
You will have to either go via Holdom to Lougheed or Holdom & Goring.
Or would people use Still Creek Ave - that could create traffic.
