I've read that a typical reaction time to hit the brakes in an unexpected situation is 1.5 seconds. A few weeks back I had a left turning oncoming car pull out suddenly from the blind spot created by the car going in my direction who was stopped and also waiting to turn left. I hit the brakes and swerved right - it was too late to stop but luckily I was going a bit under the speed limit and that gave the guy turning left enough time to stop so that my swerve allowed me to clear him.
Out of curiosity I measured my reaction time based on my dashcam footage from the time that the car became visible until the time that the hood started to dive down due to the braking. Surprise - it was pretty much exactly 1.5 seconds.
From the timestamps on the Granville Bridge collision videos (I'm assuming that the forward and backward facing dashcam footage is from the same car) it looks to me like he had 3 seconds between the time that the truck crossed over into the second lane where he would be clearly visible (the timestamp just clicks over to 17:02:05) and the collision (17:02:08). It's not a lot of time, but it could have turned a head-on collision into more of a glancing blow.
Again, I'm not blaming the victim, just trying to emphasize how important it is to pay attention out there, people!
