Not sure either.
My guess is that the remaining levels above the mall have tall enough ceilings to repurpose (former lobby and ballroom, etc) and provide a buffer for future construction. That space could also be useful during construction for a site office and storage.
When the Eatons building was reno'd, columns in the parkade were beefed up, so I'd expect the same here, but don't know about columns through the 2 mall levels that would in theory remain occupied.
Also, I figure those columns would need beefing up if the new tower is a lot taller than the old tower.

The floor of Level 5 must be a transfer slab based on the column spacing on the floor below (from these abandoned hotel plans).
Whether that transfer slab can support a 50 storey hotel is another matter
(by comparison, the transfer slab at Hotel Georgia Residences was a whole storey tall).
So that's probably why they stopped there.

Williams-Sonoma are opening 3 stores in part of the Nordstrom space at CF Rideau Centre (Ottawa) - Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and West Elm.

Could they be a possibility for one of the spaces here?

The 3 storey unit at the corner of Granville & Robson is still unknown, so it's a possibility.

If those stores left their current locations it would be pretty devastating for South Granville's retail strip.

I still remember when they were slated to shut down on South Granville even to the point of holding a liquidation sale over an entire weekend with everything 50-70% off only to go back to staying open at the last moment. I got some good espresso cups for dirt cheap haha.

I do like that row of furniture stores and boutiques in South Granville.
