‘He’s unbelievable’
Young Winnipeg Jet hopeful, Bjorck, shines brightly in prospects tournament

Mike McIntyre
Sunday, Sep. 13, 2026

CASSIDY DANKOCHIK / THE CARILLON

Winnipeg Jets forward Viggo Bjorck signs autographs at Jets development camp earlier this summer.

It’s safe to say Viggo Bjorck made plenty of new friends and fans this past weekend — including members of his own Winnipeg Jets prospects team which split a pair of tournament games in Quebec.

Take Davis Burnside for example. The undrafted 22-year-old forward, who signed with the Manitoba Moose last spring after finishing up at Ohio State University, couldn’t believe his eyes when he was put on a line with Bjorck, the eighth-overall pick from this summer’s draft and one of the most exciting young players in 2.0 Jets history.

“You see all the highlights and you just can’t wait to play with him,” said Burnside.

It wasn’t long before they teamed up for a highlight of their own. Bjorck made a sensational through-the-legs, no-look pass to Burnside on Sunday afternoon, setting him up for a shorthanded snipe in an eventual 6-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs young —.

“He’s unbelievable,” Burnside raved after the game as he spoke with the Jets social media team. “I don’t think I’ve ever really played with a player like that before. He just makes plays, he’s poised, and a ton of fun on the bench, too. He’s awesome.”

Bjorck had a goal — a beautiful wraparound — and a primary assist in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens kids to kick off the four-team event. And there were plenty of other chances as well for the slick 18-year-old Swede, including a dazzling solo rush up the right side which led to a clear-cut chance from Burnside on Sunday.

Memo to anyone playing with Bjorck: You best be ready for the puck. He’ll find you.

“I was calling for it but didn’t know he was going to go between-the-legs and add a little flash there,” Burnside said of the set-up on his goal. “That just shows his vision. An unbelievable play by him.”

While Bjorck may have stolen the spotlight, he wasn’t the only young player to shine.

Brayden Yager had himself a stellar weekend, with a goal and two assists and plenty of poised, confident plays and rushes where he showed off his speed and skill.

“I feel ready to play in the NHL,” Yager, 21, told the Jets social media team. “I think I had a really good summer, and I feel really confident. So yeah, I mean, gonna go into camp and work my tail off and try to earn a spot.”

Yager — the 14th-overall pick from 2023 who was drafted by Pittsburgh and then traded to Winnipeg in exchange for disgruntled first-rounder Ruter McGroarty — had 30 points (10G, 20A) in 68 American Hockey League games for the Moose last year.

Along with Bjorck, he’ll be one of the young players to keep a close eye on this coming week as Jets training camp gets underway.

Others who stood out against the Habs and Leafs included rookie defenceman Alfons Freij (two assists), Ontario Hockey League graduates Kevin He, Jacob Julien and Kieron Walton — who all scored goals — and the three college free agents signed last spring in forwards Burnside (goal) and Lucas Wahlin (goal, assist) and defenceman Lukas Gustafsson (assist).

“I’m grateful for what they’ve given me so far,” said Burnside, who played in two games with the Moose at the end of last year and figures to get a more prominent role starting this fall.

“Hopefully just continue to prove myself and work as hard as I can. Do everything I can to make a good impression on the coaches.”

He and Walton will be rookie pros this season, while Julien is coming off an injury-plagued rookie campaign which limited him to just 31 games with the Moose.

“(Julien) continues to take another step. He has a really good stick. Very smart hockey player, creates a lot of plays by using his knowledge out there,” Moose coach Mark Morrison told the Jets social media team

Julien, who stands 6-4 and weighs 190 pounds, was also noticeably physical at times.

“It’s part of the game, right. Any time I can separate the man from the puck, that’s what I’m going to do,” he told the Jets social media team.

Goaltender Samuel Hrenak was stellar in Saturday’s game, stopping 21 of 22 shots against the Canadiens. The 18-year-old Slovakian, who was selected in the third round by the Jets this year and plays with Fargo of the USHL, nearly scored an empty-net goal as well.

Alex Worthington, an undrafted goaltender who is signed to an AHL deal with the Moose and spent last year in the ECHL, was beaten five times in Sunday’s loss, with the final goal being into an empty net.

“I thought it was great,” Morrison said of the overall weekend.

“They’re a great young group of professionals and carried themselves the right way. They bonded together really quick as a team and they competed really hard. A lot of them are going to Jets camp, some are going back to junior. A lot of them are coming to Moose camp. It’s for them to prepare themselves, and I think those two games did a really good job of that.”

He singled out the power play for praise, which converted three times over the weekend.

“I think you can look a little bit into some of the skill level that’s out there. You know, Bjorck, Freij, Yager, Gustafsson, I could go on and on,” said Morrison.

“It just seems that there’s the right pieces there in terms of net-front and flanks. I thought they moved the puck really well and created a lot of chances.”

Now it’s on to the main event.

The Jets will hold medicals on Wednesday before the on-ice sessions begin Thursday. It’s an abbreviated camp this year, with the first regular season game set for Oct. 2. Winnipeg will play four preseason games — this Saturday in Edmonton, next Monday and Tuesday at home to Colorado and Edmonton, and Sept. 25 in Denver.

Summer-long stalemate drags into fall
Suspension on the horizon for Hellebuyck as pre-season set to start

By: Ken Wiebe
Tuesday, Sep. 15, 2026

In this high stakes game of chicken, Kevin Cheveldayoff, Connor Hellebuyck or any of the potential suitors for the Winnipeg Jets franchise netminder appear ready to blink.

That’s why this summer-long stalemate is on the verge of stretching into autumn.

Jets players have been saying what you would expect them to say over the past week, both during informal skates and at Monday’s golf tournament at St. Charles Country Club — which was an official team event.

And the ability to separate the personal relationship with the business side of the game has been prevalent in most conversations.

But the need to block out the noise is a real thing for a Jets team that comes into training camp looking for a bounce-back season and is currently without someone players have regularly referred to as the backbone of the team.

Unless he has a sudden change of heart, the expectation is that Hellebuyck won’t be reporting for medicals and physicals on Wednesday and it would be a surprise if he rolls into town for the first on-ice session on Thursday.

At some point, either later in the day on Wednesday or on Thursday, the Jets are likely to respond by suspending Hellebuyck for withholding his services.

Since he’s under contract for five more seasons with an average annual value of US$8.5 million, Hellebuyck can’t just look for another team to play for overseas while he waits for resolution either.

He’s expected to continue his workouts and hope another NHL club steps up with an offer that will bring him a more permanent in-season address.

The next pressure point isn’t likely to arrive until a goalie from another team suffers an injury or an interested party gets off to a slow start.

As for Hellebuyck, he’s having his patience tested as well, though the true test won’t come until he starts missing paycheques in October.

At some point, Hellebuyck could decide that being back between the pipes for the Jets is the best way to enhance his trade value.

But right now, that doesn’t appear to be the case, which is why many observers around the NHL remain intrigued by what will happen next and when the next twist in this plot actually arrives.

So where does that leave the Jets? In a holding pattern.

While there is urgency to sort things out on the Hellebuyck front, given the importance of the upcoming season, making a bad trade has the potential to set the franchise back for an extended period of time.

And that’s a risk the club’s general manager isn’t willing to make at this stage of the proceedings.

Monday’s report from TSN insider Darren Dreger that the offers for Hellebuyck have been “terrible” sends a signal to interested parties around the league that if you want to add an elite-level goalie, you better bring a better trade package.

Whether or not that spurs action remains to be seen.

Trades like this one are complicated, and while a segment of the fan base seems to be sliding into the get-this-over-with category, Cheveldayoff isn’t at that point yet — nor can he afford to be.

What can the Jets do in the meantime?

Stuart Skinner is currently in the catbird seat and his July 1 signing wasn’t an accident. He’s ready to be the No. 1 guy, with his career high for games played coming back in the 2023-24 season with 59 (which included 57 starts).

The netminder made a combined 50 starts for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers last season and has been to the Stanley Cup playoffs in each of his four full NHL campaigns.

The Jets believe his best play is yet to come, but two potential options in the backup role were taken off the board during the past week, with Connor Ingram choosing to retire and Cam Talbot signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.

And before the 2026 draft, Ukka-Pekka Luukkonen was a target for the Jets in the deal that didn’t get over the finish line and since trade protection kicked in on July 1.

Notable veterans who remain available for a deal are Morweena product James Reimer, Petr Mrazek and Matt Murray.

And on the other end of the career spectrum, the Jets have prospects Thomas Milic (the Manitoba Moose MVP last season) and Dom DiVincentiis (who had a strong showing with the Moose during the Calder Cup playoffs) vying for the backup role.

With only four exhibition games this fall, the Jets could roll with Skinner in two of those starts and leave the other action to the aforementioned prospects and any potential players in camp on a Pro Tryout Offer.

The club could also wait to see who is placed on waivers leading into the regular season.

For example, Brandon Bussi was claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers by the Carolina Hurricanes and he was the guy between the pipes when the Stanley Cup was raised in June.

Yes, Freddie Andersen did most of the heavy lifting for the Hurricanes, picking up 13 of the 16 post-season wins, but Bussi made 39 starts during the regular season and chipped in the final three wins after Andersen got hurt.

Another example — and a potential trade move that would make the most sense — is Colten Ellis, who was also claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues last season and got into the first 16 games of his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres (including 14 starts), going 8-4-2 with a 2.90 goals-against average and .903 save percentage.

So, maybe the Jets pivot to Ellis as a complementary piece if they can also acquire a middle-six forward or two (like Jack Quinn and/or Ryan McLeod), defenceman Radim Mrtka and some draft capital.

And while the situations are different, there are parallels to the Pierre-Luc Dubois deal with the Los Angeles Kings that took place at the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville.

Moving a two-way centre with size and tenacity brought back Gabriel Vilardi (who has grown into a top-line winger coming off his first 30-goal season), versatile forward Alex Iafallo, a speedy forward in Rasmus Kupari and a second-round pick that became defence prospect Alfons Freij.

The positives that came out of the Dubois trade should bring some comfort for a fanbase hoping their club will be on the right side of the playoff line come April. Until then, Hellebuyck watch continues into the pre-season.

When Hellebyuck became a top tier goalie and started winning awards I never thought his career would end this way. Sad to see him willing choosing to walk away from the NHL near the peak of his career.

Just once, I want to see Chevy get so unhinged about this whole thing in the press conference tomorrow, because it's so ridiculous.

Nobody wants to pick him up because of his playoff record, but Chevy is showing them his regular season records and his accolades as a selling point...

Let him sit until he's gone. He's the best player that Jets has ever had, and he chose to build a big hill to die on.

Helle publicly asked the Jets to improve the team or he was out of town, the Jets did not improve the team. What did everyone expect?

1. The Jets did improve the team by trading Stanley and Schenn and not signing their annual crop of crappy fourth liners.
2. It’s difficult to make dramatic strides to improve the team when half the league has Winnipeg on their no trade list.
3. He’s a player under contract in no position to demand that the team be improved. Just stop pucks.

The Jets were arguably the top regular season team between 2023-25, and he completely — the bed in both playoffs. That's not on Winnipeg. That's on Hellebuck.

This has nothing to do with the Jets being a contender, and everything to do with the Olympics and their aftermath.
