CBC has been doing interviews of multiple lower mainland city mayoral candidates over the last few weeks.

They have not been doing councillor debates. So that would be airtime lost for their brands (just to us CBC exclusively as an example)

OneCity says yes to almost every development, the Greens are NIMBYs who like bike lanes, COPE says no unless it's free or subsidized; not all of that information can be found on their websites.

Pete Fry voted against the Commercial bike lane FWIW.

He feels like another Kennedy Stewart to me. Waffle master, not really effective at anything.

You waste everyone's time when you post these kind of smooth brained comments.
By your logic nobody should ever try to get elected unless it's very certain they would succeed. They ran their campaigns and it eventually became clear Pete Fry was the frontrunner progressive.

On CBC he literally said he would be like Kennedy Stewart but better due to less of a focus on housing.

Good lord. I think Kennedy's only real successes were some of his push for more housing.

Ugh why can't we ever have a pro housing progressive in this city. Azaroff was literally the only chance of that it seems

So Fry had a bigger ego than Azaroff, I guess that should have been foreseen.

I'm afraid to say my tactical voting mind is feeling very ABC-down-ballot right now. TEAM and the Greens cannot be allowed the steering wheel.

I think the polls were pretty clear. TBH I was shocked how low Azaroff was on them, and how high Fry was. I guess there's that "Fry" name recognition.

He's voted against many things that matter to progressives and is somehow getting a pass from many of them for it. That is concerning, as he'll be worse than Stewart. Stewart at least had a fractured council to try to manage and that stopped him from accomplishing much.

You mean Fry listened to the businesses along Commercial? Heaven forfend!

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Commercial Drive in Vancouver is on its way to becoming a more pedestrian-friendly street with slower traffic, wider sidewalks, piazzas, and parklets.

A motion pushing for the street to be transformed was brought by councillors Pete Fry and Melissa DeGenova, and approved by council Thursday…

… Council heard from more than two dozen speakers on the motion, and Fry says the feedback was mostly positive. One point of contention was the addition of a separated bike lane. Two attempts to amend the motion — brought by Coun. Christine Boyle — were defeated.

Fry says businesses did not want to see more parking eliminated, and residents were not generally supportive of the idea.…

I'm disputing the claim that he always voted for bike lanes. Try keeping up. I DGAF about bike lanes on Commercial. I don't think they belong on arterials.

By the same token, businesses always vastly overestimate the number of their customers that arrive by car.

Businesses are notoriously wrong for how they think bike lanes are going to affect them. The downtown BIA was against them before they went in downtown, now after they've seen that bike lanes are actually good for business, the BIA is in favour of them.

Fry shouldn't be swayed by a small number of vocal opponents. That he is is concerning.

How is Commercial Drive an arterial? It's filled with parked vehicles and traveling on it is inefficient as hell, there's a reason the 20 is the slowest bus

I'd argue that arterials are the only place where bike lanes are 100% required, since that's where cyclists need the most protection from vehicles.

Agreed that Pete Fry (or the Green Party) is not at all pro-bike lane.

Why is it a busy road when it's so busy with vehicles?

Woodland is a good N-S bike route parallel to Commercial. Just like Broadway, we don't need dedicated bike lanes everywhere. Closeby routes are good enough. I'd support spot improvements to Woodland.

It's not even classified as an arterial by the CoV It's a shopping street clogged with parked cars, the redesign proposed years ago (that Fry voted against) made perfect sense for what the road is today. But hey, people with your viewpoint won, and the street is so super efficient now that bike lanes aren't on it!

Clark and Nanaimo are good N-S vehicle routes parallel for vehicles too, quit it with this nonsense.

Here's an OpEd from a decade ago decrying how efficient a redesign would have made the street (as an arterial)

Quote:
Businesses along Commercial Drive are concerned that permanent bicycle lanes will cause The Drive to go from a destination shopping and entertainment district to a transportation corridor that encourages cars to zip through.

How would bike lanes free up space on Commercial?

Bikes are part of the transportation system in CoV, but a small one. Get over yourself.

Speaking of BIAs, the mayoral candidates are routinely citing the BIA claims that businesses in their areas would shut down and they would not be able to attract new tenants (because of new spaces being built outside their BIA realm?) if they had approved the Villages Plan, which is an interesting claim.

I don't think it's quite been articulated what exactly the BIAs are asking for to help get them new businesses or retain existing ones.

This asks an interesting question... is the role of a retail strip or a store to serve a BIA, or if one BIA gets an influx of redevelopment and new tenants at the expense of an adjacent BIA is that also bad and "predatory"?

If the 20 is slow now, bike lanes will make it even slower. Add bus lanes and wider sidewalks, upgrade Woodland and Victoria to triple-A, the end.
