You think he was trying to warn him off by stabbing someone with a knife.

Singh changed his story several times according to the article.

I didn't say he was trying to warn him off, I think he tried to stab him which I believe the evidence may support.

Did he want to murder him? What makes you think he did, given that he didn't even initiate physical contact?

What happened is as plain as day, we have multiple angles and clear HD footage.

Why it happened was decided in court, and it was deemed manslaughter.

"In Canada, the main difference between second-degree murder and manslaughter is the intent to cause death or the knowledge that an act is likely to cause death."

With —, it's always 2nd degree. I think it usually is with knives too but that's a lot harder to prove.

It certainly wasn't an unprovoked attack.

Also bear in mind this guy has been in custody for three years now at this point. So much for catch and release?

He's looking at 4 - 15 years for this now, with I suppose 3 already served.

He will get double time for those 3 years, correct? Either way I don't see much point discussing this. whatnext will whine about whatever the outcome is.

No, Bill C-25 in 2010 ended double credit for time served.

Judges can still grant 1.5x time served.

Isn't the 1.5 time almost routinely given except in cases with bail breaches/large criminal records?

I mean the fact he didn't just pull out a knife and start stabbing him for no reason should be a bonus.

Looks like the fun Granville Entertainment District is attracting some nice bridge and tunnel folk:

Two Men Claiming to Have — Terrorized a Downtown Vancouver Burger Shop on Video

Forty-eight seconds of video, a flipped wooden bench, and a man shouting that he has — at a burger counter on Nelson Street.…

…. One man in a black graphic T-shirt and grey sweatpants stands on the base of the flipped bench, yelling profanities and slurs at the employees behind the counter.

A second man in a black hoodie stands at the order counter.

Within seconds the first man is shouting “I got —” and claiming to be facing murder charges.

“You know Brother’s Keepers?” he asks the staff, naming a BC gang that the RCMP’s gang suppression unit described in 2021 as “prominent and violent.….

I saw that. I don't think that's how real Brother's Keepers would act in a restaurant towards staff. But I'm no gangster.

Convenience store worker shot early Sunday morning in Mount Pleasant

A convenience store worker was shot early Sunday morning in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says officers were called to the store, located near Main Street and East 16th Avenue, at approximately 7:13 a.m. on Sunday.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

BC Emergency Health Services transported the victim to hospital in serious condition.

No arrests have been made, and investigators have not released any information about a suspect or suspects.

The shooting remains under investigation.

^I know the owner. Great, great guy. He was shot in the leg, and has already been released from the hospital, thankfully.

This is all alleged, but one of the local homeless in the area that I talked to saw the perp before it all happened. Apparently, he was a junkie that turns up around Main St. every now and then, and was causing trouble. He came back with a — looking to rob the store, but the owner was having none of it. It looks like a struggle ensued, and he was shot.

Glad he is going to be okay at least physically. That’s got to be traumatic. We need to stop pretending that the trite “junkies aren’t dangerous to anyone but themselves” trope is accurate.

seems our Canadian justice system strategy on — is missing the mark, at least we will see what kind of punishment the culprit ends up with when he is hopefully caught

I'm curious....
How do you imagine that that scenario would have played out any differently had Conservatives been in charge?

....either provincially or Federally.

(I'm assuming Conservatives are your preferred alternatives in both cases as I don't imagine you're making a case for Federal NDP or the provincial version of whatever offshoot new party (or parties) that those former Conservatives who left their caucus are planning to form.)

I only ask because crime tends to stay at relatively the same level regardless of who is in power (...with gradual constant rises or decreases through changing administrations) - with the point of that being that people who commit crimes rarely give a — who's in power when choosing to do so, as if it might dissaude them that a particular party is in charge and "...maybe, I should't do this because I'll get a heavier sentence" - type reasoning.

Crime does tend to take a higher than normal uptick during distressing economic periods, .....for obvious reasons, .....and as such one could argue we might be seeing such an uptick period now.

But I highly doubt you were pining for a change in government back during the Great recession days of '07/'08 to the early 2010's when Harper and the Conservatives are in the Federal driver's seat, with any uptick in crime we might have seen then.

I'm not even a Conservative fan but they are not as bad as the Liberals, I didn't vote for them in the last two elections either

Okay......but you still didn't answer the question.
So I'll ask it again....

How do you imagine that that scenario would have played out any differently had ANYONE else (forget Conservatives and put them to the side for a moment) been in charge?

....either provincially or Federally?

You're complaining about things having gotten,.... "worse not better in the last decade of the Liberal party".

"Worse" relative to whom? Who was in charge before them?

Obviously talking 'provincially' here since Feds have less influence on local crime and crime within the province and in the cities than the provincial and municipal parties and authorities.

First of all, Liberals haven't been in power and in control of the province in almost a decade, and they don't even exist now as a party.

Unless you meant 'liberals' - small "L" and were actually talking about the NDP.
Your comment said provincial NDP. Fair enough. But before their stint in power, it was the Liberals who were in charge. And you said things have now gotten worse in the last 10 years (under the NDP),.....since the Liberals were in charge?

So does that mean you preferred it under the Liberals (big "L") before the NDP took over?
Because that's what you seem to be intimating.

I'm trying not to conflate provincial and Federal for a moment since this incident happened in BC and you seem to be lamenting the state of things in the province - even though you decided to throw in the Feds for whatever reason.

In any case, feel free to stick to just the first question and answer only that since that's what I originally asked.
But obviously the other questions were begged by your logic and reasoning.

Man charged after three assaults in downtown Vancouver

A 45-year-old man is facing multiple assault charges after three separate incidents in downtown Vancouver on Thursday, according to police.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says officers responded to several reports between 9:50 a.m. and 12:55 p.m. involving a man allegedly acting erratically and randomly approaching people on the street.

Police say the first incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. near Seymour and Georgia streets, where the suspect allegedly punched a man in the side of the face as he walked along the sidewalk.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the suspect allegedly spat in a man’s face near Davie and Granville streets.

A third incident was reported at approximately 12:55 p.m. near Georgia and Hamilton streets, where the man allegedly spat in the face of another victim.

Officers were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect following the alleged assaults.

Gregory Edwin Lawrence Brumwell has been charged with three counts of assault and remains in custody.
