Yes last departure Calgary YYC - São Paulo GRU Brazil is February 14th & with the return on February 15th GRU - YYC .

Not too surprising as Mid February - WestJet needs the 787 plane ✈️ used on 3x weekly YYC - GRU - YYC (to do some Mexico flights from YYC) as from mid February onwards to end of March it is the start of Spring Break time + 1 week reading break for University / College students in Canada = demand for Mexico ✅.
Wonder if this cut in GRU schedule has anything to do with Starlink getting installed (finally) on the Dreamliner’s this fall/winter?

No, it was primarily done due to the rising cost of fuel. Given it is the longest route in WS network it was the most at risk/exposed so they opted to shorten it to just peak season.

I suspect if it goes well they'll consider doing it for the full winter season next year.

They still haven't redeployed that freed up 787 frame yet. Seems a bit late to add more November frequencies to either ICN or FCO.

Also that user mentions Mexico - but CUN / PVR have already been scheduled on the 787 and don't need the freed up frame to work. (CUN is up to 2x daily / PVR 6x weekly).

This came up today. Large demand for Americans to visit Calgary and our cheap dollar.

American Airlines launches seasonal Calgary-New York service

American Airlines has launched new seasonal service between Calgary International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The airline will operate three flights per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from Aug. 6 to Oct. 4.

The service will be operated using Boeing 737 aircraft with capacity for 172 passengers.

“We are proud to continue growing our presence in Canada during a milestone year for American and American’s Canadian service,” said Paola Torri, director of operations for Canada and Mexico at American Airlines.

“With this new service, customers in Calgary can seamlessly connect through our JFK hub to destinations across the United States, Europe and beyond.”

“We’re seeing more Americans choose Calgary as their destination of choice, whether they’re coming for Stampede, exploring our city’s vibrant culture or using Calgary as their gateway to the mountains,” said Balázs Bogáts, chief commercial officer at Calgary Airports.

Flights will depart New York at 9:29 a.m. and arrive in Calgary at 2:16 p.m. The return flight will depart Calgary at 3:37 p.m. and arrive in New York at 9 p.m.

American already was serving YYC-New York with its weekly LGA flights launched last year.

The JFK flights operate on opposite days of CLT so they are now at 5x daily (except for 6 flights on Saturday).

Even as transborder traffic dips, it's nice to see the level of capacity remain relatively strong. I'm pleasantly surprised more cuts haven't been made.

Seems like MEX is finally working, despite the bad timings. I wonder why.

Speaking of MEX, it looks like it was was further increased to 6x weekly for winter.

Also:
ATL - Increased to 2x daily
PVR - 787 service increased from 6x to 9-11x weekly.

Baggage kiosks and self-serve belts ... buggy?

I almost always fly with carry-on only. Today, for the first time in a very long time, I checked a bag.

In the international terminal, an alarming number of the self-serve kiosks were down. They either had Windows error messages on-screen, or had other passengers' transactions partially completed -- and frozen.

Once I finally found one that worked (and found the very small bar code reader for boarding passes, which is different than very big passport window reader that's surrounded by flashing lights) I received my tag. Yay.

I attached my tag, and moved on to attempt Step 2.

Then, at the self-serve drop off belt, more problems. Many of the self-serve drop-off belts were down, while others seemed to be down. (No two drop-off belts seemed to be showing the info on their screens. Screens - the user interface screen above the BP reader - all showed different displays. Meanwhile, on the wayfinding screens above the belts, some showed WestJet logos while a couple just appeared to be blank. It's just ... confusing.)

I put my full-sized suitcase, with tag properly attached, on the belt. First try: no response. It appears to be dead.

I try a different drop-off belt. This time: "Your bag is under 2kg and cannot be checked." (It wasn't.)

I try a different drop-off belt ... attempt #3, as my frustration rapidly builds. Success! Hooray.

Is it always like this?

Rumor is that Unifi got the EY ground handling contract.

For anyone who hasn't been through lately.

A security is now the Westjet help desk, awesome if you are in the D gates with and missed connection. Not that the previous location was good, but there must be a better spot... Like the C security, which is now a staff bypass.

The moving walkways by A24 are gone, which I did not like being there, but for people with mobility issues, its a long way from A-D with super limited carts and and minimal moving walkways. Im not sure what the best option is, but they need something better considering the distance and amount of A-D connections that happen.

I really hope long term there are plans to utilize all that unused space on the non secure side and move it post security where its crowded.

There are larger plans, once B tier is opened up. Tenders are currently out to engineering firms, but nothing will happen until B tier is opened - which is still a year out.

There will be a push to move some of the land side and security space to airside areas. A, C and securities are in planning process of being revamped. .

Thats great to hear, obviously with a legacy design it will never be perfect, but there is lots of room for improvement!

What would really help the connections issue is if AC would move their lounge to the old Chinook lounge, leave A for AC, Porter and Flair. WJ with B and C. Cant see that happening though.

For next number of years expect everyone to be everywhere.
Once B opens up, that will be to WestJet needs, but A and C will start to be updated (nowhere near same scale as B) so assume people will be all over the place.

If I recall, the B concourse only had 9 gates (while both A and C have 10).

That may be due to the temporary-looking building that was placed on the west side of B ... many, many years ago. It has a large image of the mountains on one side so as to give passengers in the terminal a 'view' instead of blocking a big span of windows.

What is (or was) that building for?

Will it still be around after B is redeveloped, or will its function be incorporated into the 'new' B concourse? And, if it's gone, will B have a full 10 gates when it re-opens?

It was a screening building for transborder luggage. No idea what it's currently used for.
