Well, we spent a few days in W-S recently and stayed downtown (a Sunday through Wednesday). We didn't notice much bad stuff just not much activity overall and noticeably we were shocked that 80 percent or so of the downtown restaurants were closed being open mostly Thursday through Saturday or Sunday. How can they make money even? It did not seem like a city of over 250k, a county over 400k, and a metro over 700k?

Yes, and HELL YES, about the restaurants that can only manage to be open FOUR nights (and nights only) a week.

But, ya know, COVID!!! "Just can't find staff these days."

Oh my word, I'm blessed by my wife Susan. Such an exceptional cook! So glad to stay home for dinner!

Sadly, restaurants throughout the country have drastically cut back on hours and days of operation. Even in the DC area, it is shocking to see so many restaurants that are not doing lunch, or take Mondays or Tuesdays off.

The last piece of the eastern section of the Northern Beltway is scheduled to open on Sept. 19, weather permitting.

Projects & Construction:
I want to thank the photographers and local businesses, sharing updates on projects, who make this thread possible. Without you, these updates won't happen. I don't make any money from this and these updates are to share, with both locals and out-of-towners, what is happening in the city they love. Many people reading this are far-away and this allows them to see the projects. If you can, please support any local businesses or follow social pages sharing photographs and thank them.

The Byrum preparing to go vertical! A new craft brewery! Interstate 74 opening this month! I removed most of the entries others already posted. And the return of the extras I removed from the last post. Lets get updated!

Lauren can find some of the most obscure '80s music:

Economic Development:
Greater Winston-Salem is currently in talks with 4 employers interested in moving their headquarters here. They are also in talks with 3 aviation companies, 1 tech company, and 3 life sciences companies.

Learning Commons:
We haven't talked about this project in two or three years? Finally, we have a rendering for the new building under construction at Forsyth Tech's main campus. And we have a name for it: Forsyth Tech Learning Commons: A New Hub for Collaboration and Student Success. It will have meeting rooms, study rooms with collaboration spaces, staff offices, a library with an outdoor balcony, a coffee bar, a lounge, a lobby, and an exhibit area. It includes a three-acre courtyard with seating areas. The location is the construction site between Snyder Hall and the Carolina Building.

New Craft Beer Brewery:
Are you ready for a new craft beer brewery? Lockstitch Brewing will open a new brewery and taproom in the historic Gentry Store Building in downtown King. They will keep the building's historic character in the upfit.

New Yadkin County Data Center:
A Montreal data center developer is acquiring a 120-acre site with a 500,000-square-foot warehouse for $60 million. Closing is expected in Fall 2026. They plan to develop an AI data center for WhiteFiber. Completion is set for late-Summer 2027.

Loewy Building Apartments & Retail:
Interior demolition of the office space is now completed and workers will start on framing the interior spaces for apartments and retail.

New Tenants/Leases:

Workout Anytime will open at the Pfafftown Center, in space 4685F, on Yadkinville Road. Thomas Construction and Consulting Services is the general contractor for this upfit.

It appears as if a ramen restaurant will open in the vacant former barbecue space at 1630 Fox Trot Court. This will be a significant renovation that will construct a dining room that connects all of the buildings on the site.

Artesano Bakery will open at 329 Jonestown Road, in Centre Stage at Jonestown.

Could we see a small branch of the YWCA at Marketplace Mall? It is being strongly considered. If the project moves forward, an aerobic exercise space would open in the mall.

The Walmart, at 4550 Kester Mill Road, will add 8 electric vehicle charging spaces. This project will install four 400kW chargers in the box store's parking lot.

Satori Suites will fill the 190 space at 690 Jonestown Center.

Behavioral Innovations will join Freddy's in the new retail development at Kester Mill Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard.

The Snow Building, in downtown Kernersville (111 North Main Street), sold for $575,000. David Fitzpatrick, from the neighboring building, is the buyer.

The Pipe & Pint is considering a location at 1090 Burke Street that may include a bar. I'm not sure if this is a relocation or a second location?

Mountcastle Insurance leased space on the third floor of the 101 South Stratford Building. Landmark Builders is the GC for this upfit.

The Sawtooth Center will construct an outdoor kiln at Mixxer Makerspace. It's open-air, but will have a metal roof covering it. KCO will be the GC for this project.

The Grounds:

Stream Restoration:

Property Transactions:
I was told 408 and 414 North Liberty Street sold to a New Jersey company for $220,000. You may remember never-built proposals to open a country store or an upscale speakeasy in these buildings and also a plan to convert one of the buildings into a conference center. Before the pandemic, there was a proposal for a possible 8-storey Moxy Hotel at the site. These two buildings are best remembered as the old Woolworth Building and a women's clothing store called Holly. We'll see what happens here.

The Byrum Apartments:
C. Herman Construction was selected as the general contractor for this 286 apartment unit project. Yes, it's preparing to start construction! Chris Herman said it will go vertical later this year. This is their first project with DPJ.

New Apartments:
A developer is considering converting the commercial space at 1903 Margaret Street into apartments. This building looks exactly like an apartment building, but it's a two-storey commercial space.

Interstate 74: Built!
This project is now completed and will open to traffic on September 19, 2026. Work now moves to Interstate 274 on the western side of the city and the expansion of Interstate 285, from I-40 to I-74, upgrading U.S. 52 to an Interstate in the downtown Winston-Salem area.

the wide glass lowrise (university corporate center) in the background caught my eye and i was curious, so ended up doing some digging. apparently that was Nabisco RJR's HQ in the 80s, and is a half a million sq of office space. interesting tidbit. (though ya'll probably knew that already and all, lol)

I kinda just did.

It's an opinion piece by a guy who used to live here, left in 2017, came back, and made a list of the usual complaints: homeless people, empty storefronts, no cops, and a general sense that downtown was just so mean and scawy.

We've all got complaints and quibbles, but this was just a quick hot take that offers zero solutions, zero exploration or consideration of any of the issues, zero thought about wider trends that may have affected every urban area since 2017, etc. Just a thin, frightened analysis from someone whom I'd imagine should know better.

Honestly, I can't believe it was published by our own newspaper. I guess they were looking for clicks.

It's an opinion piece. He's entitled to his. And I'm entitled to write it off as a half-formed grumble.

At the risk of being accused of looking a gift horse in the mouth, that office building is in a really bad location, obstructing the view of Deacon Tower when you turn down Deacon Blvd. That used to be a really impressive sight.

They've created a corridor/axis to the front gate. Honestly, you could never really see much of it because of the buildings and tree line along Piccolo until they demolished everything in sight. But I did like the view during that brief period of time. Take a historical stroll on google street view and you'll see you could only see the tip top of the stadium.

The Pepsi University Corporate Center. A 790-foot/241-metre wall of angled glass on a brick podium. I looked through my collections for anything you may find interesting on the building.

This $40 million building was constructed for their international business division headquarters that relocated from Switzerland to Winston-Salem. It was a major economic development win for the state in April 1975. Reports from 1975 said this international division relocation would bring 2,000 new jobs to Winston-Salem. The company moved into the completed building in September 1977, but the grand opening was on March 17, 1978. The grand opening was attended by President Carter. You are right about their foods division moving to this building. Interesting building features (in 1977) included a 340 seat theatre, an art department for magazine and billboard ads, a darkroom, and a television studio. During construction, workers divided construction into eight sections (modules) and worked from one end to the other, completing a module and then starting the next module. When the building opened, it was noteworthy for having the latest 1970s energy-saving features during an energy crisis. They used reflective silver thermopane glass that can reflect 82% of solar heat. It also featured an automatic temperature and lighting control system. The HVAC system could extract internally generated heat from employees and lights. It used perimeter heating for winter and had an economizer cycle with enthalpy control. When this building was announced, there was concern they would leave downtown. In February 1977, they finally announced a long-planned downtown office building that would be their largest and that is the concrete box where the company's offices are currently located.

I recall that originally this building was to be downtown at about 50 stories, but was considered problematic as being to close to Smith Reynolds at that height and at that time, or am I confuisdng this with some other project? Probably the latter since BB&T (Truist) was to build a 55 story headquarters building downtown if the acquisition (merger) of Fifth Third Bank (Cincinnati) had materialized so that height should not have been a factor.

ASPIRE, formerly the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, has been approved by the Local Government Commission to issue up to $25.4 million in conduit revenue bonds to build the Lofts at Motor Road. The money will be used to help pay for the acquisition, construction and equipping of the planned 216 residential unit project on city-owned land at 4738 Mount Pleasant Drive.
The developer is The Lofts at Motor Road LLC of Greensboro, which has Craig Stone as its managing member.
The projected development would cost just under $65.12 million, of which the city would provide $6.6 million. Construction costs are estimated at $41.96 million, along with $7.41 million in site preparation expenses.

I would love for them to build a second row of retail along the south side of Deacon Boulevard where there currently is parking to create a fuller Main Street or retail district aesthetic and vibe. Plus, any reduction of that area of asphalt is an improvement.
