I don’t see Seattle overtaking YVR in TPAC coverage anytime soon, unless Alaska and Delta decide to launch a whole bunch of new routes. Hopefully in this upcoming announcement, YVR can get a couple new routes to the Mediterranean such as Rome and Barcelona or maybe even Athens at 3-4x weekly each.

Not sure why given the reduction in YVR-DEL flying overall with the growth in South Asian population, but I'm sure they've got the figures that tell them it's not worth it. Definitely the lack of travel to IKA isn't helping the ME3 interest in YVR, since that'd be a big driver pre-war.
I forgot who said this but someone mentioned that the reason we haven’t gotten EK to launch flights out here is due to aircraft availability. Apparently they are currently refurbishing their planes with new cabins and because of that they’re in a bit of a fleet shortage for long haul flights. With that said I do still think we’ll eventually see EK and QR out here.

They keep delaying restoring capacity to Australia as well. Slowly but surely but still not back to last year.
And the broken record same old same old

CA to increase YVR-PEK to 5x weekly from Sept 27 2026, operating on days 13457
MU to increase YVR-PVG to 5x weekly from Jan 2027, operating on days 13467

CZ and MF announcement still to come...

So if the rumor was correct (6x weekly for the rest of 2026 and 6x for 2027), then that is half of the allotment for both 2026 and 2027 are taken, and half are still to be announced? So far all of the increase are to/from YVR, since the new flight likely will not have Russian overflight right.

I wouldn't go that far.

I too am surprised EK hasn't announced YVR by now, but if you think about it, they haven't announced an increase at YYZ either. That tells me they haven't yet decided how they will play their Canadian card. If they announce an increase on YYZ-DXB to 14x weekly, then we can definately say that EK isn't interested in serving YVR. Until then, anything is possible.

I would put DXB-YVR top of the list (albeit with more YYZ-DXB a close second). But clearly, there are issues preventing EK from increasing service to Canada at this very moment.

Hopefully, that will change in the coming year.

I think there are a lot of factors as to why EK hasn't announced anything yet.

1. They are going through a fleet wide retrofit, affecting the A380s and 77Ws. (EK has announced reductions to key markets in the US in the next few months, partly or most likely because of this).

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/260811-eksep26us

2. DXB-YVR is one long flight, requiring more than 1 frame to operate daily. Jet fuel prices have gone up significantly in the last 5 months, so this doesn't help the situation.

3. The Iran war has decimated O&D demand to the UAE, especially by foreigners. Even connecting passengers are thinking twice before choosing a ME3 carrier at the moment. So EK might not be keen on starting 15+hr routes just yet. Not to mention the great circle route from DXB to YVR passes right over Iran, and that area is a no go at the moment.

The GC route also passes right over Russia. Maybe Canada's extention of the landing rights for U.A.E carriers forbids them from flying over Russia. This one, if true, is a biggy, and directly affects the chances of EK starting YVR.

(I believe Canada is doing something similar with their bilateral with China, as nname said.)

4. In a sense, YVR's success (especially to Asia-Pac) hurts the chances of EK coming to YVR. The immense Asia-Pac coverage you guys have kind of hurts EK. After all, there are a million 1 stop options to go from YVR to DEL. Be it via East Asia, YYZ/YUL, the US or Europe. EK knows this and probably feels there are better uses for their 77Ws and A350s.

Yes, IKA being off limits also doesn't help. So EK is probably prioritizing routes with healthy demand to not just South Asia, but the rest of Asia, the middle-East and Africa as well.

5. The AC-EK partnership. The success of this partnership might be playing against YVR getting EK.

Firstly, the partnership means EK already has access to YVR, via AC codeshares on YYZ/YUL-YVR. Aslo, AC flew YVR-DXB, so EK knows very well the demand out of YVR and the connecting flows they will potentially get at DXB if they started service to YVR. So again, knowing this info, they might feel those frames are better used elsewhere, at least for now. It also doesn't help that AC canceled YVR-DXB. That probably raised a few eyebrows over at EK.

So I think it's a combination of all these factors that are playing against EK at YVR. But I wouldn't go as far as saying that EK isn't coming to YVR at all. Things can change pretty quickly.

Glad the route seems to be sticking with A359. Those A332s they used to send were awful.

Now MF increase YVR-XMN to 3x weekly from Oct 26:

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/260825-mfnw26yvr

Xiamen Airlines at the launch of Northern winter 2026/27 season plans to expand service on Xiamen – Vancouver route, with the restoration of 3rd weekly flight from 28OCT26. Additional flight is served with 787-9 on Wednesdays (Thursdays from Vancouver)

MF805 XMN2240 – 1840YVR 789 135
MF806 YVR0140 – 0600+1XMN 789 246

=========

So only CZ left to announce? I heard that 3U did not get any additional frequency this round. If that's the case, then someone got an extra weekly? Or JD's allotment was separate from HU, and HU still yet to announce their plan?

[EDIT]
CZ to increase YVR-CAN to 4x weekly starting Oct 25 on days 2357, then additional flight added on Saturday starting Jan 2 for a 5x weekly service next year.

So this round of increase...

Sept-Oct 2026:
2x CA YVR-PEK
1x JD YVR-TAO-HGH
2x CZ YVR-CAN
1x MF YVR-XMN

Total: 6x weekly

Jan 2027:
3x MU YVR-PVG
1x CZ YVR-CAN

Total: 4x weekly

Is there something else going to be added? If the rumor is correct, there are still 2x weekly left to be added in 2027.

If both CZ and MU gets 3x weekly, would CA get another weekly flight in 2027? Are any other airport in Canada other than YVR getting the additional service in this round of expansion?

The option for new service in other Canadian city is quite limited though, since only 14x weekly from the initial agreement are grandfathered to allow Russian overflight. So far 12x weekly are used on all the YYZ flights (3x CA, 4x CZ, 4x MU, 1x HU), plus 1 of the 2 weekly for YVR-TFU and YVR-XMN. Realistically only MF would be able to use the Russian overflight right for YYZ-XMN (which they are not interested), and HU may consider restarting YYC-PEK (which they picked YVR-TAO over it). Otherwise all of the frequency will likely used to expand YVR routes.

And looks like YVR is the beneficiary of each additional frequency. Good news!

Is there any Pre Covid destinations that has yet returned ? I feel like there were a couple of cities that were served that has not returned yet.

You mean by the Chinese side?

There are still:
YVR-NKG-KMG
YVR-TSN-SZX
YVR-CGO-CTU
YVR-SHE-CTU

Given CTU is now a domestic airport, the latter route will also move to TFU if they ever come back. However, since 3U now got 359 that can fly direct to YVR, so I doubt they would prefer the stopovers.

The TSN stopover was dropped shortly before COVID hits. Given HU had been running direct SZX for a while, it likely won't come back either.

So the only one with realistic chance of coming back is the NKG route. But at this point the priority for MU may be raising the direct service from their main hub to at least daily. Similar may also apply to CA and CZ. Even with this round of increase, YVR still at slightly less than 50% of peak frequency pre-covid. YYZ gets slightly over 50%, while YUL/YYC got no returned service at all.

There were talk of YVR/YYZ-WUH route pre-covid, to be operated by CZ since it's one of their hub/focus city. However, looks like the priority is to restore CAN-YVR (and YYZ) service first. However, CZ did redirect some of its SFO-CAN to SFO-WUH-CAN though, and both route now run less than daily.

I think with this change from the Chinese side, along with the year-round frequency/capacity increase announced for PR/QF/FJ, as well as winter (and potentially year-round) increase for TK, ZG, etc... these should push both summer and winter long-haul seats from YVR above the 2019 level? This is, even before AC's announcement later this week or early next week.

Curious what would be the result of the summer-seasonal trial run of YVR-NRT from NH - would it be extended or cancelled next season. So far they haven't add the additional flights for next year.

Good thing I track that!

YVR-Asia is 4.8% above 2019, so even without these increases Asia capacity was essentially restored.

What is still miles behind where it was before is Europe, which is still 12% down from 2019. Pretty incredible given the growth in European tourism since Covid.

Fun part is total seats are just 0.3% behind 2019 capacity, so unless AC adds no flights to YVR in their next announcement that should be the bit that gets us back to pre-covid summer seat capacity. Hopefully it's a fun new city that gets us there!

Oh, PR is 10x weekly year-round, but the additional 3x weekly service is currently scheduled to operate with 359 rather than 77W.

HX is likely to only operate at most 7x weekly next summer due to having to dedicate part of their fleet to operate to Australia. So these two cancels out. HX only have 2 long-haul rotations for YVR/SYD/MEL. MEL is 3x weekly year-round, and YVR/SYD alternates between 4x and 7x weekly. YVR is currently running 10x weekly due to temporary suspension of MEL for 2 weeks.

With the Chinese increase, unlikely they'll sacrifice Australian service to operate more flights to YVR.

IST is 3x 789 and 2x 77W for the winter. Summer not announced yet, so I wonder if it'll go beyond what they have for the winter.

AC to MNL and SIN are both 4x weekly for the summer. This summer was also planned to be 4x weekly, but cut back to 2-4x due to the oil crisis.

TW is still planned to be 4x weekly for the same reason.

Hmm... I guess with even more Asian flights, this is enough to push the 2027 number above 2019 now?

If not, the last 2 frequency from China will definitely push it over. Rumor that it'll be 1x CA and 1x HU.

For CA, it's most likely to increase YVR-PEK to 6x weekly... maybe that's when AC will temporary cut PEK back to 5x weekly for a month to support the new CTS route?

For HU, it's a bit of a wildcard. There are several options they can use the extra frequency on...
1. restart YYC-PEK
2. increase YVR-SZX
3. restart YVR-TSN
4. start YVR-CKG (they fly from SEA to CKG)
5. start YVR-XIY (they fly from YYZ to XIY during COVID)
6. start YVR-PEK/PKX (which they now allowed to do so as a second carrier on the route)
7. something completely different?

From the rumor, #2 is already ruled out.

^ no doubt these changes will push the overall intl capacity over the line!

9 foreign airlines have announced increases in capacity to YVR in the last month - that’s pretty amazing in my books!

Meanwhile YVR’s status as the #1 gateway to the north grows again

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/260826-4nnw26yzf

On Yellowknife – Vancouver route, the seasonal service in 2026/27 season commenced earlier this week on 22AUG26, 3 months earlier compared to 2025/26. Service is scheduled twice weekly, increasing to 4 weekly from 20NOV26, 5-6 weekly from 01JAN27 to 26MAR27. Schedule below focuses on the period of 04FEB27 – 19FEB27.

4N850 YZF14255 – 1440YVR 735 5
4N870 YZF1750 – 1935YVR 735 147

Hainan has been in talks with YYC recently to return - but I suspect that isn't high on their list of priorities.

Asked AI, and this are the most logical choices:

Most logical:
1. Increase YVR-SZX to 2x weekly

Other possibilities:
2. Restart YYZ-XIY
3. Start YVR-HAK
4. Start YVR-CKG

Long shots:
5. Increase YYZ-PEK to 2x weekly
6. Restart YYC-PEK

But this is HU we're talking about, so it probably defy logic....

Well the start date is potentially Jan 1 2027, so there is still some times to finalize things. Maybe they're looking even further ahead? Since without Russian overflight, the most logical choice would be adding service to Western part of Canada, and they only had 2x weekly service to Canada pre-COVID.

HU only got 3 of their 12x weekly frequency back pre-covid, while most airlines got close to half. MF already fully return to pre-covid service by this full. So HU most likely going to get more next round...

=================

It's being increasing hard to dig out the old distribution of all 76x weekly flights pre-COVID nowadays, so I'll post it again and compare with current recovery after spending a while to dig it out...

8x (42%) 19x Air China
5x 14x PEK-YVR
4x PEK-YUL
1x PEK-YUL-HAV
3x PEK-YYZ

9x (43%) 21x China Eastern
5x 11x PVG-YVR
4x 7x PVG-YYZ
3x KMG-NKG-YVR

9x (60%) 15x China Southern
5x 7x CAN-YVR
4x 5x CAN-YYZ
3x CAN-YVR-MEX

2x (17%) 12x Hainan
1x 7x PEK-YYZ
3x PEK-YYC
1x 2x SZX-YVR

2x (67%) 3x Sichuan
2x 3x CTU-YVR

3x (100%) Xiamen
3x XMN-YVR

1x (33%) 3x Beijing Capital
1x 3x HGH-TAO-YVR
