the best thing about the view from Longueuil is that it leaves out the view of Longueuil.

You need a long eye to see past the shabby downtown of Longueuil.

BTW I love that view with Le Monstre in front of the Jacques Cartier bridge. It's like the view of Manhattan from Brooklyn.

Manhattanization....that would have been an overly dramatic way of describing Toronto until the explosion in the number and height of condominium buildings that occurred during the past 15 years or so, but nowadays, it is very apt. Hong Kongization might be more appropriate term, as NYC is still dominated by office towers.

Manhattanization or Hong Kongization? I'll just go with the label that makes me sound more wordly and sophisticated.

It is a grand place to watch the Als or the McGill Redmen, on a early fall day with a few friends and a few beers.

I am much more scared of the Longueuil skyline than of the roller coaster, and I really hate roller coasters.

Winnipeg is attempting to develop a similar mixed-use neighbourhood on the University of Manitoba campus called Southwood Circle. It's modelled after Calgary’s University District, the project has seen infrastructure installed and parkland preserved, though no residential developers have yet to commit.

I think I've seen some nice street level photos of that area shared recently here. But the above pics (and the smokey weather doesn't help) make the area look gloomy - as if the Waterloo student towers were clearcut leaving wood frame construction stumps. It's definitely a more affordable way to build with less risk, but it could really do with a better mix of styles, height and variety - but not expecting or saying Vancouver or UBC style housing towers would be the answer here either.

As for the Winnipeg renderings of Southwood Circle, quite nice overall, more aspirational and may not come to pass but I like the concept.

Near the University of Victoria there is also an increase of six-storey wood frame construction. I don't mind it mixed in but would not want an ocean of them, unless there was significant variety and high design/build quality.

UVic is also planning to develop a mixed used neighbourhood called Cedar Hill Corner.

The plans are based on UVic's 2023 Real Estate Strategy which states the "the primary purpose is to contribute to a vibrant and distinct campus community, while generating long-term revenue for the university." Southwood Circle at the University of Manitoba and UniverCity at Simon Fraser University are both referenced as case studies by UVic.

UVic is overlapped by the municipalities of Oak Bay and Saanich, the latter recently rejected on a technicality a 349 unit rental project next to the university while complaining of a provincial funding delay for a 17-storey student tower at UVic.

I'm not surprised we're seeing other master planned university neighborhoods based on Calgary's University District. It's the formula for how it should be done.

I don't usually like newer master planned neighborhoods, but this one impressed me, in particular the main street. I'm looking forward to checking it out when it's completed. What's the completion timeline?
