^^^One should ask why Houston doesn't already have an NHL franchise?!? It's not like they haven't had NHL opportunities in the past - but, those individuals chose to go elsewhere.

To Houston's credit, the Aeros were a AAA-level hockey team for about 20 years. And Houston had a team in the World Hockey Association (a major professional league that rivaled the NHL) in the 1970s. If I'm not mistaken, Gordie Howe played for them for a bit.

The NHL seems to like smaller, growing, young, vibrant, wealthy cities. Cities where their team would garner the most attention.

We'll see...

I'm in the boat that the arena needs to go near the Domain. I think that area has the most potential to really blossom into a larger entertainment area. It has two freeways and rail. Anyway...

I think NHL would do so good in Austin. Lots of PA and NE migrants live here. Plus we are hungry for pro, since we only have MLS currently and thats not a top 4.

From what other people have posted. Austin is a shoe in over Houston. Someone stated that the Friedkin Family makes all the decisions. Then another poster showed an article that Friedkin bought offices here in Austin. To me that means it has been decided.

Precisely. If Houston were such a shoe-in, they would have gotten a team before Vegas did. Or the Phoenix team would have been moved there instead of Salt Lake City. Both of those markets are smaller than Austin and are much smaller than Houston.

While most of the discussion is the Domain area. Don't forget there is a fast up and coming District that will become a major achor to the sourhern half of Austin and that is the St. Elmo District. It's got the space, lots of redevelopment opportunities. The area is already changing rapidly with more in the pipeline. A hotel was recently announced, more music venues are opening along with residential. Eventually the south light rail line (honestly they need to go ahead and extend it to St. Elmo now rather than stopping at Oltorf.) Ultimately the entire stretch from Congress to I-35.

While I agree that St. Elmo is a southern anchor, it lacks a signature large scale master planned development that would enable it to be NoBu’s true peer—and NoBu has two of them (Domain and the IBM redevelopment) plus the potential for a third (Gateway).

St. Elmo isn’t hopeless, but the land divisions in the area will make the process slower—AND more traditionally urban, which is a bonus.

St. Elmo would be cool, but traffic down there is already such a nightmare and without proximity to the red line I just don't see it.

Yeah, it would be nice to see it get down to St Elmo and up to Crestview but I think the Airport is the priority extension bc everyone has a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 for the airport connection. If it's not Dog's Head then the Uptown campus would make a lot of sense given they have paused development.

Dog's Head seems like a logical location. Checks off quite a few boxes.

1. The Land Scale Needed for a "District"

Beyond the Arena: Modern sports franchises no longer build standalone stadiums; they build master-planned entertainment districts that generate year-round revenue from retail, dining, hotels, and residential units.

The Mega-Site Advantage: Dog's Head features 2,614 contiguous acres under a single ownership entity. This scale is double the size of downtown Austin, providing ample room for a multi-billion dollar arena complex alongside sprawling mixed-use developments without the gridlock of the urban core.

2. Built-In Public Funding Infrastructure

The TIRZ Advantage: The Austin City Council's approval of a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) for Dog's Head means that future increases in property tax revenue from the site are automatically funneled back into funding roads, utilities, and public infrastructure.

Lowering Developer Costs: This taxing structure makes it much more financially viable for a group like the Friedkin family to offset the massive infrastructure costs tied to building a new stadium ecosystem.

3. Unmatched Regional Connectivity

Transit Hub Proximity: The site is bounded by US Highway 183 and State Highway 130, and sits directly north of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Catchment Area: This highway positioning allows fans from downtown Austin, the tech-heavy northern suburbs, and neighboring San Antonio to easily access the district without getting trapped in central Interstate 35 traffic.

4. Capturing an Untapped Sports Market

First "Big Four" Team: Austin is currently the largest metropolitan market in the United States without a team in the NFL, NBA, MLB, or NHL.

Corporate Backing: Placing the arena district in an area also anchored by high-tech employment centers—like the proposed Amazon robotics facility—perfectly aligns the franchise with corporate sponsors and premium suite buyers.

NHL’s Bill Daly says expansion team in Houston or Austin could play by 2029-30

By Chris Johnston
Aug. 22, 2026 Updated 12:30 pm CDT

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7531325/2026/08/22/nhl-expansion-houston-austin-bill-daly/

MUNICH — The NHL is on track to award its 33rd franchise to Texas as soon as the end of the year, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Athletic.

Daly said he’s expecting the league to get an update on the process from the group working with Houston billionaire Dan Friedkin in the coming weeks. Friedkin’s Pursuit Sports has already agreed to pay a $2 billion expansion fee to bring a team to either Houston or Austin, pending the ability to build an arena in one of those markets and secure final approval from the NHL’s Board of Governors.

“We’re moving forward in Texas,” Daly said in an interview at the NHL’s European Media Tour. “I expect ultimately we’ll be in a position to bring something to the board to get their view on it. So, that’s proceeding at a pace. We’ll probably get together with the group again in September and kind of see where they are in the process and what they want us to do to help, to the extent they need anything.

“If we finalize that and the board approves it, then (at the) end of this calendar year we’ll have an announcement that we’re expanding to either Houston or Austin.”

Houston is the fourth-largest market in the United States and was the original focus when the NHL first started exploring expansion with Friedkin. It remains the most likely landing spot for the team, although Austin held enough appeal as an emerging, unique city that the parties agreed to further explore that market as well.

Daly told The Athletic the NHL is also actively engaged in talks with groups hoping to land the league’s 34th team. Those conversations aren’t nearly as advanced as dealings with Friedkin’s group, which hopes to debut its Texas team within three years.

“They’re projecting the ability to start play in 2029-30,” Daly said. “So we will have one down and potentially one to go. We have ongoing discussions both with people in the Phoenix marketplace, but also Atlanta, and then we’ll see what comes of those discussions.”

According to Daly, the NHL doesn’t feel the need to line up the timing of its next two expansion teams, a view partly informed by the league’s experience expanding to 31 teams with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 before returning to a balanced number of 32 with the Seattle Kraken in 2021.

“I think the commissioner’s always asked about, ‘Well, that’s only one (expansion) team, what about the second team?”‘ Daly noted. “Certainly if it happened that two could come in the same year that might be more convenient, but I don’t think it’s a barrier if they don’t.”

Interestingly, the NHL’s favorable experience with Vegas has bolstered consideration for Austin. While it can’t match Houston’s population or corporate base, it has added appeal with only one top-tier pro sports franchise: Austin FC of MLS. The NHL hit a home run in Las Vegas by establishing its presence in the market ahead of the NFL and MLB. The Golden Knights have been wildly successful, becoming one of the league’s higher revenue teams from Day 1.

Asked how the league weighs the chance to go to a bigger market (Houston) or gain a foothold in a growing one (Austin), Daly said: “Probably different people weigh it differently, and would look at it differently.”

“I view Austin to be similar to our decision to move into Las Vegas at a time where the other leagues weren’t considering it in part because of the size of the market and mid-size nature of it,” he added. “We needed to satisfy ourselves that there was kind of a sufficient fanbase there that would embrace the club locally. We probably got lucky along the way, but as it’s turned out, the city is in love with that franchise. I would even distinguish it from at least football, with respect to whether the (Raiders) fanbase really exists in Las Vegas or whether it’s a tourist fanbase.

“I think (the Golden Knights) have clearly proven that the locals, the people who live in and around Vegas, are supporting that franchise.”

As the NHL enters another growth phase, other changes will follow.

Daly said there’s been no formal discussion yet about what would happen to the playoff format with the introduction of a 33rd team. However, he did allow that the league likely wouldn’t want to keep the existing setup and create a circumstance in which more teams miss out (17) than qualify (16) each season.

“I think certainly an argument can be made that once you’re over 32 franchises you’re looking at maybe an expanded playoffs of some sort,” he said.

Sitting in Europe, where the NHL is currently ramping up efforts to grow its brand and business, the deputy commissioner expressed confidence that the quality of play won’t suffer when the league adds two more teams.

The NHL believes there are enough high-quality players to fill out those rosters.

“I think we have enough boots on the ground and experience to know kind of where hockey skill is today and the players who can play and have proved they can play in the National Hockey League,” Daly said. “The source and supply of players is not a concern. The dilution of talent as an argument against expansion I don’t think holds any water today. Does it support four-team expansion? That would be a question for me.

“Certainly, a two-team expansion doesn’t raise any concerns.”

MLS exec calls Austin FC 'one of the crown jewels' already in its brief history

Forbes this year ranked the local club as the seventh-most valuable MLS franchise

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/...ariant=cx_undefined&cx_artPos=0#cxrecs_s

By Justin Sayers – Senior Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal
Aug 22, 2026

--While visiting Austin on August 18, 2026, to accept the Marshall Award for Values in Sport from the Pro Sports Assembly, Winley highlighted Austin FC's rapid rise and its unique community-first foundation. Despite being in just its sixth MLS season, Winley noted that the club's $855 million valuation and its immense success are directly tied to its deep local engagement. This includes impactful initiatives like field refurbishments with Huston-Tillotson University to keep soccer accessible in growing urban areas.

Austin's Potential for More Pro Sports

--With rumors circulating about the NHL, WNBA, NWSL, or MLB looking at Austin, Winley expressed strong confidence in the city's ability to host more major league teams.

--Moving past UT: He noted that for a long time, the University of Texas was "the only game in town."

--Corporate growth: Winley stated that adding more professional sports will bring greater traction for corporate partners, especially given the city's booming tech sector and rapid population growth.

Another hockey team in Texas? What you need to know about NHL expansion

Ryan S. Clark, Kristen Shilton, Greg Wyshynski
Sep 16, 2026, 07:00 AM ET

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/4995...tin-houston-updates-news-draft-divisions

....We are likely to find out more about the state of NHL expansion at the board of governors meeting in New York on Tuesday.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN last week that he would reach out to the Friedkins for an update, including a temperature check on Austin and Houston as their current focus for NHL expansion. The potential owners informed the league that they'd give both sites a fair shot in their assessment....

As much as I would love to see NHL hockey in Austin...I just don't see it happening.

Houston has a longer hockey history and has a major league arena already in place - that could be used as their home or at least in the interim. Austin does not. The Moody Center cannot host hockey. The HEB Center only holds 6,800 for hockey (not even half the capacity of some of the smaller NHL arenas). Winnipeg's arena is the NHL's smallest at ~15,300.

didn't they already say that the houston arena wouldn't work and they want a new one for the hockey team if houston is selected? it's been pretty clearly stated that no matter where this team lands, a new arena will be built. they're said that from day 1.

They're saying as a temporary home that Toyota Center could be used, but Moody Center could not for some reason. I have never heard that, and would like to hear more if possible. I can't quite grasp why you couldn't put in a hockey rink, and the Moody seats over 16K which as a temporary home for a season or two should be fine.

The bigger issue is I doubt Austin or Travis County would be amenable to helping pay for a new arena.

I've heard that the inaugural season for the expansion franchise will be played in their new arena regardless of which city they choose.

The Moody Center was not designed and constructed to accommodate a hockey rink (not only in size, but, infrastructure).

I agree - Austin will not step up to assist in landing a franchise.

I don't mean to be combative, but can you provide any evidence? It doesn't make sense to me that the Travis County Expo Center and HEB Center could have a hockey rink, but not the Moody Center. The Frank Erwin Center also used to host events with an ice rink as well, such as Disney On Ice. Why is it possible at all of those venues, but not Moody? I'm genuinely curious.
