I know many people, specially in the US, are very interested on genealogy, find out more about their ancestors.

I recently got one of those tests from a colleague and my results were:

I was really into it, a few years back, but my DNA sample added nothing to what my paper trail told me: both sides of my family immigrated to America from England in the 1600's.

I had a feeling you might have Sub-Saharan African and North African genes in you, and some years ago you had said that you were so sure that you wouldn't be mixed.

23andme updated my results earlier this year; not that your DNA changes, but technology does, and their labeling does as well, as more people submit their DNA samples. Here's mine:

sopas ej - 100%

East Asian - 99.7%

-Filipino and Austronesian - 88.8%

-Chinese - 9.4%

---Southern Chinese and Taiwanese - 8.6%
---Southern Coastal Chinese - 0.8%

-Japanese - 0.8%

-Chinese Dai - 0.7%

Bengali & Northeast Indian - 0.3%

According to Google, most Brazilians trace their ancestry to a mix of three primary sources: Indigenous peoples, European settlers (primarily Portuguese), and enslaved Africans. Sounds like you fall under none of those categories.

But there is another subsection. Other European & Asian Immigrants: Between 1870 and 1930, millions arrived from Italy, Spain, and Germany. Brazil also hosts the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.

Sounds like you fit that particular trio.

At least in the major cities Brazil's white population seems very dominated by people who trace most of their ancestry back to the Italian peninsula, and Germany to a lesser extent. There also seem to be a fairly visible number of ashkenazi Jews too. I feel like Portuguese surnames are the minority in the big cities. However, I'm a foreigner who has spent a bit of time in the country but never actually lived there.

Interesting, does that mean that you are a mestizo de sangley or a Chinoy then?

Most Chinese Filipinos in the Philippines are Hoklo people, historically speaking Hokkien, which is native to Fujian in southeastern China as well as Taiwan.

I’ve always assumed that I’d have some non-European background because my father is of “older Portuguese/European” stock. My mother who has two Spanish and two Portuguese grandparents.

Even though my father looks more “non-Med European” than my mother (with strong Mediterranean complexion), I assumed I could have a bit more, maybe close to 10%, simply because his branch were in Brazil since the 1870’s at least.

I was in fact quite surprised by the very high % of Northern Italian at the expenses of Iberian. All the rest (Maghreb, Western Europe, Sardinia, Jews) could be read as “Iberian” as the region is heterogeneuous, but not such high level of Italian ancestry. Maybe from my paternal grandmother but I assumed it was all Portuguese.

That applies mostly to Mixed Brazilians and Whites from regions they’re minorities.

In the 3 southern states and São Paulo, than Portuguese has a much smaller share. In fact, I’m definitely more “Portuguese” than the average White from those regions. Those regions were overwhelmed by Italians, Germans, Spanish, Eastern Europeans, Lebanese and they greatly outnumbered the White Portuguese and Mixed.

What do you mean? He has a bit of all three of those, even if the indigenous (Central American) and enslaved African (Senegambian) are small bits. Without those bits, there would be no Yuri. Those very small bits make him, him.

I always figured I had some Chinese in me, and I figured I'd be part Hakka. Those were the people that were trading with the people of what is now called the Philippines, for centuries. "Pancit" and "lumpia" are derived from Hokkien loan-words, I think.

I'm curious to know about my Northeast Indian/Bengali ancestry. Was that from the period when the British occupied Manila in the mid-1700s (and had Indian soldiers with them), or is that ancient DNA? So fascinating. And the Philippines was Indianized way before it was Islamicized/Christianized. Lots of trade and cultural exchange among insular Southeast Asia for centures; that's where the expression "Bahala na" in Tagalog comes from (Sanskrit), and of course Bali is still Hindu.

I've never identified as anything other than Filipino/Filipino-American. I never thought of myself as Chinoy, even though I suspected I had some Chinese ancestry. I'm mostly Austronesian. When I think of a Chinoy, I think of a full-on Chinese person who assimilated into Filipino culture.

Oh yeah that's true. If you look at the totality of the results, he has a little bit of everything. I guess I was primarily looking at his main categories of Europe 87%, of which is Iberia 37%, Italy 29% and Western Europe 11%. Iberia primarily refers to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, which includes Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar.

It turns out I'm 100% pure African!!!

Actually there were already early humans living in Southern France and Northern Spain 200,000 years ago.

You are 20 or 30 years late in your knowledge of these things. Time to update your references, unless you're one of those Evangelicals who wish to have a literal reading of the Bible with an Adam and an Eve.

When homo sapiens arrived in Europe, they interbred with the humans that were already there, known as Neanderthals. The Tautavel man, in my video, as well as those from Northern Spain which are also presented in the documentary, at the direct ancestors of the Neanderthals, i.e. also our ancestors.
