Great to see some action happening in Downtown Edmonton, but those are low numbers considering the population growth Edmonton has had over the past 10 years. That's probably less than Victoria or Halifax.

There's been no new proposals for downtown Victoria for ages, luckily there is a a decent amount under construction and about to begin this year and next so hopefully this lull doesn't result in a slowdown in a couple years. Quickly checked my stats and I see 2,837 units under construction downtown right now, with about 7,900 approved or in planning status but that includes some master plans which could take a couple decades to build out.

Downtown Winnipeg currently has 3,177 units planned or under construction.

IMO any improvement in # of new downtown residential units is a good thing. London is anticipating somewhere in the realm of 5,500 new downtown units coming online by 2030. There is also some major sewer capacity work underway that is set to wrap up this year, which will accommodate 17,000 new units downtown.

Quite a lot of development in Calgary's downtown at the moment and over the past 4 years, with plenty still proposed.

Currently u/c in downtown Calgary - 5003 units (maybe more as some others might be missing as the list only keeps track of developments larger than 25 units.) and another 3,222 units currently u/c in the neighborhoods surrounding downtown (Kensington, Bridgeland, Inglewood, and Mission)

Built in downtown Calgary in the past 4 years - 6016 Units I don't have exact count for how many have been built in the past decade, but it's roughly 11,000 units.

Proposed for downtown Calgary - ~9,000 units. I'm too lazy to make a list but someone on SRC had tallied a list of proposals for Downtown Calgary and it was 9,000 and change.



Massive activity for downtown Calgary in recent years. It'll probably slow down in the next few years due to lot of those units under construction are office to residential conversions (~2,500 units) Once there completed, there may not be many after that. That and there has been a a good sized batch of highrises that have started within a short period of time.

I’d have to dig up the numbers on SRC but someone had calculated the number of units built in downtown Calgary in the last 10 years and it was around 16K.

Great to see some activity in DT Edmonton and Winnipeg!

Calgary's growth downtown has been huge, the city has a very different vibe now than it did 10 years ago. Still a long way to go to catch up to the big 3, but we are getting there!

You're both off, but Chinook Arch is the closest. There have been 14,188 units built in downtown Calgary in the past 10 years. Pretty solid average of 1,418 units per year, considering part of that was through 3 or 4 years of downturned economy.

Is the Beltline area considered downtown in those numbers?

I would assume so, the Beltline is considered a part of downtown and is where the majority of the residential boom has been happening.

In Quebec City

Two new 23-story residential buildings will rise on Boulevard Laurier in the Sainte-Foy district. Construction has begun on the project's first phase, which is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2028.

Groupe Dallaire is investing $370 million in these towers, to be named Stelaz. Each will house 367 apartments. The first is currently under construction at 2810 Boulevard Laurier, on the vacant lot next to the Jules-Dallaire complex.

I had to scroll back up to see where that was. Thank God Sainte-Foy is 8-10km from the old city. These look like developments in London and Ottawa.

It includes the Beltline as well. It's Statscan's definition of downtown Calgary, which is basically 5 municipal neighbourhoods - Downtown Commercial Core, Downtown West End, Eau Claire, East Village and Beltline).

Today downtown Calgary is estimated at 63-65K. Quite a nice jump from 38K in 2016

That Hamilton proposal is probably the best that intersection could hope for, since the condo market has fallen through the floor, and I don't know if Hamilton developers are willing to spend big design bucks on purpose-built rental.

Still, it's a shame that the facades of the historic buildings that were demolished via neglect couldn't be rebuilt as they once were.

Thank you. Makes sense. I personally don’t think Beltline is downtown Calgary any more than a neighbourhood like Osborne Village would be downtown Winnipeg. It skews that specific metric, but it’s great Calgary’s inner city is growing regardless.

Its an interesring question... how does one define "downtown"?
