Cheers.
I suspect they aren't allowed to have the crane overhanging the rail line at all. Seems there are pretty strict rules when doing construction along the railway, which makes sense. I think they had to build all kinds of protective walls etc. on that property line before construction.

Ah yes.. the rail line! I hadn't thought of that. Thank you for your thoughts. I figured it was property line related but never considered the VIA track.

It will be nice to get another tower along the Riverside corridor. Feels quite urban taking the transitway between Billings and Hurdman.

Are the exterior walls concrete? There is also some type of iron works structure on site as well. Such a strange building. Maybe its because you cant get a decent vantage point from Riverside or Smyth.

Either way, will be cool to carry on with the ROWS OF MARCHING TOWERS.

This is the first I hear of this project, but it looks like it's a reject from the 1980s! Are they sticking to the design in the original rendering?

Yeah. It ain't gonna be pretty. But hey, if Ford was able to make his friends more money, shouldn't we all be happy about that?

Interesting built form, with the steel bookended by heavy concrete towers on each side.

It reminded me of a Nazi Germany Flak Tower like the ones I've seen in Hamburg, Vienna, and Berlin when I drove by last week.

Project update (Aug 2026)

The City of Ottawa has received a Site Plan Control revision application to permit the construction of a temporary parking lot on the Phase 2 lands of the Schlegel development where the future “Town Square link” and retirement home will be constructed.

Proposal Details

The subject site is home to The Ottawa Hospital Riverside Campus and the future Schlegel Seniors Village Development. The Schlegel Seniors Village Development was approved on August 4, 2023 (file number D07-12-21-0170). The proposal includes a Long-Term Care Home in Phase 1, and a 15-storey retirement home (270 beds) and Town Square link in Phase 2. Phase 1 is currently under construction. Additionally, two parking lots, approved in July 2025 (file number D07-12-25-0006) are under construction onsite to serve the Ottawa Hospital.

This Site Plan revision application has been submitted to accommodate the construction of a temporary parking lot to the north of The Ottawa Hospital’s Riverside Campus and medical building, south of Smyth Road, west of the VIA Rail Line, and east of the Bus Rapid Transit corridor. The parking lot will include 90 spaces and will be generally located in the footprint of the future Retirement Home and Town Square link.

The Ottawa Hospital has identified the need for additional parking to serve their current needs. The temporary parking lot will help address these needs in the interim and will be removed when construction of the Phase 2 retirement home and town square link commences.

Taking bets on the proposed parking lot never to be removed and Phase 2 never to be built. $10?

Is it the plan for this seniors' residence to have an active relationship with UofO's School of Medicine? I think Schlegel Village in Waterloo is set up to provide practical and academic experience for students.
