More details are now available on sweeping changes coming to Ottawa's public transit network at the end of August.
OC Transpo regularly makes seasonal changes to routes and schedules, but those beginning Sunday, Aug. 30, are part of a broader $29-million plan for the return of more federal workers to their downtown offices.
According to a report to city council, OC Transpo is anticipating an increase of 65,000 trips per week in and out of Ottawa's core. Transit is "the backbone of the city's response" because the road network "has limited ability to absorb significant increases in private vehicle travel," the report says.
The broad strokes of the transit plan came out and were approved last month. They include:
- More frequent O-Train service, specifically more trains on Line 1 on weekdays between the start of the morning peak and early evening, and a slightly earlier start on Line 2.
- Improvements to para transport systems.
- New express bus routes.
- Improved connections from park-and-ride locations and major job hubs.
On Friday, the city's transit services general manager Rick Leary issued a broader overview.
Here are some of the highlights. Specific stops and schedules are available on the OC Transpo website, and Leary said staff will be at key locations starting Monday, Aug. 31, to help.
Express 500-series routes
Leary said seven Express routes, identified by a route number in the 500s and an orange route icon on maps, will connect transit stations and key employment areas faster than before:
Blair station is getting Route 526 to and from Chapel Hill station on Brian Coburn Boulevard and Route 538 between it and Millennium, Trim, and Place d’Orléans stations.
Tunney's Pasture station is getting routes 561 and 562 connecting it to Terry Fox and Eagleson stations. The difference comes in where these buses go in the afternoon on the way back west. It's also getting route 563 to Eagleson and Innovation station.
All three buses will start at Gatineau's Terrasses de la Chaudière in the afternoon.
The 565 buses will go from Innovation, Terry Fox and Eagleson to the Department of National Defence's Moodie Drive headquarters. The 566 will do the same from Tunney's Pasture.
Some of these routes have one trip in the morning and one in the afternoon, while others have more.
Connections to Gatineau
The memo says besides those three 500-series routes mentioned above, routes 74 and 75 are being extended to Gatineau.
The 74 goes to and from Limebank station and the 75 goes to and from Barrhaven's Minto Recreation Centre.
The Gatineau end of the route is at Terrasses de la Chaudière.
Weekday service changes
There will be more weekday trips on routes 5, 63, 98, 226 and 256, Leary said.
Twenty-two routes will have what Leary called "more accurate and reliable schedules": the 5, 6, 7, 9, 14, 18, 19, 20, 25, 41, 42, 48, 51, 61, 63, 73, 75, 85, 88, 117, 163 and 173.
Details of the changes vary by route. For example, the 5 is getting more runs overall and the 98 will have more peak period trips.
There are also adjustments Leary said are more of the usual seasonal tweak, including taking away what was seen as a seldom-used stop by route 11 at Bayview station and taking route 48 off Bank Street.
The O-Train's east extension will not be ready for Aug. 30.
Other aspects of what's officially called the Transportation and Mobility Strategy and Action Plan include traffic cameras and enforcement, tweaking construction, improving cycling and walking infrastructure, and parking changes — with a proposal to add lots at city facilities and places of worship going to planning committee on Aug. 19.
