Yes, the Assiniboine was definitely high for July. Heavy rains in western Manitoba in June and early July caused major flooding upstream, the river crested in Brandon around July 13th with levels high enough to require sandbagging and a state of emergency there. The Portage Diversion stayed open through most of the month to protect Winnipeg. By early August though the levels had dropped a lot.

Winnipeg comes from the Cree word for "muddy water," describing the murky lake and rivers in the area. "win" meaning "muddy" or "murky," and "nipe" meaning "water." So it basically translates to "muddy water".

The chocolate colour comes from the rivers being naturally muddy because they flow through the flat Red River Valley, which is covered in thick layers of fine silt and clay left behind by ancient glacial Lake Agassiz about 8,000 years ago. This soft, erodible sediment gets easily picked up by the current, especially during spring melts and floods, keeping the water muddy with suspended particles.

I knew Winnipeg meant muddy water but thanks for the full history.

Wonderful, except there is one thing that I really don't like that is shown in this photo. The Eye of Montreal. Perhaps it is on guard, surveying the surroundings for any sign of Clockzilla.
