TSU's fresh impression

Texas Southern University President J.W. Crawford III breaks down the school’s $1.7B campus overhaul amid its centennial celebration.

By Janet Miranda – Reporter, Houston Business Journal
Aug 7, 2026

The university's 2025-2035 campus master plan outlines a new visitor center, campus police building, student recreation center, and athletics visitor and recruitment center area. There also will be enhancements to the football field and track, conversion of the existing student recreation center and a locker room addition.

On the academics side, the HBCU is planning a new student success center, academic building, aviation and engineering building, and student housing as well as a business school expansion. University officials also are planning a new central parking garage, new development buildings, a new conference center, a supplemental utility plant and an expansion of the university's museum.

TSU also is executing a $10 million allocation from the Texas Legislature to plan and design a new Thurgood Marshall Law Center to replace its aging law school building.

The school's first phase will focus on completing three new buildings that are slated to be delivered in time for the centennial: the Catalyst for Urban Transformation and Nabrit Science Center, which are the school's joint academic and research facilities, and the Health and Wellness Center. Construction on those buildings will begin this year. The three buildings are supported by more than $95 million in state funding.

Published -Thu, Aug 6, 2026

Community invited to celebrate historic milestone in Jewish campus life on Aug. 30

On Sunday, Aug. 30, Chabad at Rice will celebrate a milestone years in the making when it breaks ground on a new 16,000-square-foot Jewish Student Center. More than the start of construction, the ceremony marks an investment in future generations of Jewish students and in the enduring strength of Jewish life at Rice University and throughout the Greater Houston community.

Members of the Greater Houston Jewish community are invited to join students, alumni, parents, donors, university leaders and friends for the groundbreaking ceremony and reception as the community comes together to celebrate this historic occasion.

The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m., at 1915 University Blvd. The program will be followed by a festive reception. There will be a large cooled tent with air conditioning for everyone to stay cool.

Members of the community planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Sunday, Aug. 16, at Jewishriceu.com/building.
