The term West Asian is flawed. It refers to a geographic region, not an ethnicity.

Here's the explanation from Statistics Canada of the visible minority categories.

"Respondents were asked “Is this person:” and were instructed to mark more than one of the following response categories, or to specify another group, if applicable:

White
South Asian (e.g., East Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan)
Chinese
Black
Filipino
Arab
Latin American
Southeast Asian (e.g., Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai)
West Asian (e.g., Iranian, Afghan)
Korean
Japanese
Other group—specify".

The same categories Statistics Canada has been using for 25 years.

The term 'visible minority' is arguably even more egregious. Visibly a minority to whom? 'White' people?

The term might be less problematic if Statistics Canada classified 'white' people as visible minorities in Brampton. South Asians are the majority at 52.4% of the population and Europeans sit 2nd at 18.9%. Visible minority is exactly what people of European stock are in Brampton (they're visibly not South Asian) but Statistics Canada doesn't stay consistent and call them that.

They should have been retired the term decades ago just like we no longer use the term 'eskimo'.

The term visible minority is fine when there's a clear majority who would think someone from a different genetic background looks "different" than a typical person in that society. It's not that useful in a diverse society, however.

But the issue with statscan and similar data collection agencies is that the categories need to remain consistent over the long term since one of the main points of collecting the data to begin with is to see how things change over time. So if they were to change the categories to suit changing social or cultural norms, political views, etc. or even if they simply realized the categories aren't as useful as they could be, then the continuity of the information is lost. It's basically the same reason you can't merge CMAs for instance.

Does anyone still use the term "visible minority"? I haven't heard it in years.

In some suburban Toronto neighbourhoods, the visible minority is white.

I mean sure, but "white" is still the largest singular group in the Toronto CMA as a whole. Nobody is going to look at you sideways in Brampton as a white guy.

There is unfortunately interracial tension between various South Asian immigrant groups. Particularly with recent immigration. I have stories from my friend who immigrated from South Africa and looks Southern Indian (family from Durban but lived in Joburg till recently) - he's told me once he opens his mouth and they hear the accent it drops immediately. He lives in Niagara-On-The-Lake but has had some issues in Toronto.

It's kind of sad, given Canada's history of growing through immigration.

Strong jobs report for July with 75,000 full and part-time jobs created. Unemployment dropped to 6.4%. This and the recent monthly economic growth will leave PP deeply disappointed.

Indeed. He really latched onto that brief "technical" recession. What's he going to complain about now???

Given the challenges handed to Carney by the erratic and unhinged resident of the White House, I thin the Canadian economy has been performing very well.

Housing cost, Affordability. Or that the jobs were not enough.

I did see a report about the numbers of oil tankers coming into the west coast. Be interesting to see the return on investment for the TMX.

And the US lost 23000 jobs. So the tariffs are making America Great.

Housing cost remains a valid issue, even though prices have been declining in some markets. Affordability is also an issue, athough I don't know how much of that can be pinned on the current government.
I feel like PP has less and less ammunition, although his biggest problem (imo) is a message that's out of step with where most Canadians are at in these crazy times.

Its been said a number of times but he is always a couple of steps behind. His handlers can't seem to change direction.

But Avi is in the same boat.

I'd consider Avi and PP to be in completely different situations with PP having a similar problem now that Singh had back in the Trudeau era. Mainly since Carney is governing from the centre right and doing a lot of the stuff a Conservative PM would be doing. Focusing on business and trade, cutting taxes, mostly forgetting about climate change or other environmental issues, and even making pipeline deals that Smith is happy with. Other than maybe the culture war stuff depending on the hypothetical Conservative, the right is in the position of getting much of what they want so it's increasingly difficult to find stuff to complain about. So PP is stuck desperately trying to grasp at straws and outright lie.

In the Trudeau era, a similar thing happened in the the LPC shifted to the left in their campaigning and rhetoric which squeezed the NDP. A lot of it was just rhetoric and optics in that case, but the NDP was still in the position of trying to find a lane through which to differentiate themselves and communicate that to voters. Avi, on the other hand, has a much easier job in that the left flank is now wide open. His challenges is in the rally around the flag effect in that people are willing to put up with more domestic stuff they don't like because of the international circumstances and wanting solidarity. And with Carney's credentials and international connections, many are willing to give him some leeway... at least for awhile.
