Cooler today in Moncton with a high of 27C, but very humid and muggy. The humidex was a stifling 36.
We went down to Fort Beausejour/Fort Cumberland National Historic Park in Aulac NB this morning for the 250th anniversary celebration of the Eddy Rebellion/Battle of Fort Cumberland in 1776.
I felt sorry for the reenactors in their heavy woolen historically accurate 18th century military costumes. It must have been brutal for them marching into the fort, doing drills and doing musketry demonstrations.
This battle is little known in the rest of Canada, but, if Johnathon Eddy had successfully taken the fort, there would have been a real risk that all of Nova Scotia (which included NB at that time), could have fallen to the American threat. Nova Scotia has often been referred to as the "14th colony." This battle was a seminal event in the history of our country.
Fun fact. former PM Stephen Harper's 8th or 9th times great grandfather was a Yorkshire settler in nearby Sackville NB and helped in the defence of Fort Cumberland against the revolutionaries.
