You know better than 4 of the 5 largest IA engines in the world which analyze millions of webpages, scientific articles, books, etc. Now, who is acting as the 'know-it-all expert' here?

What you're doing is confusing hype and edginess. And you're also confusing your personal preferences (which cater to only a small demographics) with the preferences of the general public. Not everybody visiting London is interested in some underground warehouses in formerly derelict areas located 45 minutes by public transport from Charing Cross. You may find the French concession not worthy of your attention because it's not underground or edgy enough, too frequented and photographed now, etc, but obviously a large part of the Shanghainese don't share your preferences.

And in any case, since this was the whole point of this "conversation", your edgy, underground areas are unlikely to be in the old Chinese city. There is nothing comparable to Le Marais, Covent Garden, or Barrio Gotico in Shanghai.

Oh I can only dream....Well enjoy your Starbucks and selfies, the postcards of street art and those little clothes you put on dogs Maybe some flower baskets and like, really important jewellery too!

If only I had a fake Louis Vuitton. Because the AI's all agree on the world's expert!

Le Marais and Covent Garden are not cool by no means.

Same for New York, the goal is to have homogeneous blocks, not filaments and tentacles everywhere that make no sense.

And both Paris and New York include unbuilt areas in their pink zone, just like London. Check Queens and Brooklyn, it's full of marshland, green areas, unbuilt areas. The pink area for Paris includes lots of forests (not just the two bois of Paris proper, but also the Bois de Meudon, the Forest of Fausses Reposes, the Forest of Meudon, the super huge Forest of Saint Germain en Laye, where Louis XIV was born, and various other forests and woods that you've probably never heard about, and which make the delight of Greater Paris).
So why didn't you make a straight north-south line in Nassau? Why you left Staten Island out when it's NY city proper?

It's not about ranking, but consistency. And I suspect New York would lose way more than 100,000 people.

New York City, Hudson, Union, Essex (minus Fairfield Township) counties get 10,960,245 people (2020) within 1,465 km²;

If you add the 5 closest communities in Westchester County you have 11,373,152 people within 1,568 km². It's off by 900k people.

----------------------------------------------------

On the other hand, London BUA gets 10,558,797 (2021) within 1,657 km². They way you design can vastly change the results you get.

This is the London BUA. This is precisely what I have not done for Paris and New York (the "octopus shape"). Do that for New York, and you can easily get 14 or 15 million people.

Ya know, I must admit throughout my day, working in a call centre, cleaning my nails, chasing a pigeon, I do stop and think...

what is FRANCE doing right now? I mean, what is it doing?

How many virginal streets of gay Paree are being assaulted by litter, dropped by Arabs? What are the current property values in St Germain de Prezza? I do wonder.

Maybe.. just maybe, there's a world expert or something out there who could tell me.

Ok. Show me how New York fits 15 million within same area within less than 1,700 km2. You tailored New York in a very unnatural way, even ignoring the city proper itself (!) and as result you found 900k extra people compared to the definition I brought.

You might no have done an "octupus" for Paris, but you definitely did for New York.

Today I was tapping away at a nail. I was doing it a bit left, a bit right, sometimes on the head. Tap tap tap. Sometimes left of centre, sometimes right of centre. Tap tap tap. Sometimes very far right, TAP TAP TAP. Someone tried to help me but he was Arab so obvs no help as he wasn't versed in civilisation (although he was like, really pale so never had any problems with racism, and was totally rich and capable of writing emails and had a kitchen and flushing loo and everything!).

I was trying to get it in dead straight but alas. Then I thought maybe an AI can help me, I consulted all 77 of them. Still not helping - I mean they can't be wrong, ever, we know this.

Then.. THEN I remembered WWFD. What would FRANCE do? Maybe France could tell me a better way, then stand there laughing at my pathetic attempts to copy them along with the rest of the inferior world. Though at least I'd still learn from their expert ways (AI agrees with this).

I wonder what the meteorological conditions are in Aix-en-Provence, about 11:34pm? What the shutter colours are like in the beautiful villages of the Massif Centrale, and the captivating history of them (which must of course involve the laughable history of all other countries trying to ape them). What exactly are the voting patterns of the Pas-de-Calais departement?

But sadly it cannot be -if only I were FRENCH (but the right kind if ya know what I mean ), if only. Maybe in another life... for now folks, we can but dream.

List has been updated and current total is 12,378,626 in 1,664 km² (642 mi²). This is roughly the same land area as Houston, Texas, or a slightly larger area than São Paulo. The population density is 7,438/km² (19,281/mi²).

Somebody seriously needs to stop pretending they are the World Expert on everything and every place. It is so predictably nauseating.

Why do some people do this? Well, let's ask AI
Quote:
People act like world experts on everything to mask deep insecurity, protect their ego from feeling small, or gain quick social status
Quote:
Psychological Drivers:
Dunning-Kruger Effect: People with low knowledge in a field lack the self-awareness to realize how much they do not know, leading them to massively overestimate their own competence.
Ego Defense: Admitting uncertainty feels like a threat to their self-esteem or social standing.
Insecurity Masking: People often overcompensate for inner feelings of doubt or mediocrity by acting loud and certain.
Need for Control: Dominating a conversation lets them control the narrative and avoid feeling vulnerable
Quote:
Social Motivations:
Social Signaling: Confident voices get attention, so people fake expertise to signal status or authority.
Impression Management: Quick, flashy answers win approval in modern social and digital spaces.
The Illusion of Depth:Reading a single article or post makes people feel instantly qualified to debate real professionals.
It might even be tolerable to accept this behavior now and then, but when it creeps into so many threads, on so many topics, even in the face of so many people expressing real, first-hand knowledge about such things and places....especially when combined with the usual gish gallop behavior...well this serves to kill meaningful discussion.

+1

I keep coming here hoping for good data, new insights, and informed discussion but it's been pages and pages of someone pushing their agenda, poorly veiled mudslinging, and attempting to prove City A is bigger/more important than City B. Most people are just going to bow out rather than engage. And this is supposedly a World Demographics thread. My posts on SSP are down about 95% from a few years ago for a reason.

You sound like a dolt, NB. Maybe you have to ask chatGPT what that is?

Sorry I don't value human experiences and direct knowledge, insight, I value what AI has scraped from the internet of human experiences and their knowledge!
