Assuming the only lane addition is the additional lane from Westminster to Steveson Southbound, I wonder whether they will reconfigure (ie reduce some of the lanes) the (about) five general purpose lanes Northbound after the Ladner Truck Rd exit given it’s only three going into the tunnel.

Is the BCNDP racing to get construction started before 2028 when the BC Cons take over so they can't cancel it, in the same way the BC Liberals raced to get Site C construction started before the BCNDP took over so they couldn't cancel it?

Coincidentally, if the Libs had also raced to finish the bridge, this would all be a moot point... but they couldn't balance the budget as it was without raiding ICBC, charging extra college fees and underselling provincial property to donors.

If this actually happens, we would sadly have learned nothing at all from the situation down south and elsewhere. The NDP may be rapidly wearing out their welcome, but there has to be a better option than the BCC!

Just remember most people vote against the party they don't like, not for the party they like most of the time.

Well said. I’ve noticed a lack of discussing the actual infrastructure in this thread. Any time any news about the tunnel is brought up the trolls come out with their “BuT tHeY sHoUlD hAvE bUiLt TEH BrIdGe!!!”

But to get back on topic I wish the tunnel had larger sized shoulders. Half a lane wide on either side improve safety and first responder response times. We can discuss the font of the station signs on skytrain for 5 pages but not this?

Certainly would be nice but adding width to the tunnel would increase the cost exponentially, easily hundreds of millions.

No doubt far cheaper to contract a standby tow truck for the life of the tunnel as MOTT does for most (if not all?) of their other crossings in the region.

Worth remembering that the travel lanes will also be significantly wider than what is there now. A similar comparison is the old vs new Patullo, and that doesn't even have more lanes. It feels much wider and safer.

In theory, would it be possible to reconfigure it for 10 narrower lanes in the future? That might alleviate the future bottleneck some of the thread's worried about.

One would get lanes about the same width as were on the Pattullo. So to answer your question, yes but no.

The proposed bridge was 10 lanes because the grade was steep for trucks. So the extra lanes were added as slow climbing lanes for trucks.
The proposed tunnel won't have grades as steep as the bridge, so climbing lanes are not required.

Slow trucks onthe old Port Mann bridge eastbound approach led to the construction of the 5th lane onto that bridge.
