That strip in Oslo won't have just happened spontaneously. Or because of incentives or other kinds of magical thinking. It'll have been something like Waterfront Drive.

Something like that could happen again. The transit infrastructure that's supposed to go down Main and along the tracks would be an opportunity for the city to expropriate every parking lot east of Main from St Mary to the Assiniboine. Once the infrastructure is built, do an RFP for the land that's suddenly immediately adjacent to two rapid transit lines.

It's pretty normal for cities to take a proactive role in development like this: set a desired outcome, meet the conditions for it to work, and let developers do the rest. I mean, the development at the Forks right next door is exactly that.

Anyway, I agree; that's how Main Street should look.
