This is a rare instance where I'm with s211 here. Rain gardens as officially designed are dead space eyesores that don't have a place in the dense urban core of Vancouver. It's as though modern civil engineers forgot why we built storm sewers in the first place.

To those saying they aren't mud strips:

2014: New development includes modern rain gardens as part of green infrastructure.

2023: State today.

Road verges or other similar measures are necessary for urban street trees to survive regardless of what they look like since being surrounded by impermeable or very low permeability surfaces make it impossible for them to get enough water. The only other option is expensive underground watering tubes. Diverting all the water to drainage sewers is not an option unless you're willing to do without street trees and all their massive benefits.
