The Chateau Prince Rupert is wild. The town itself was only incorporated two years earlier. Apparently they had already dug the foundations before it was killed.
If it had been built, I wonder how long it would have survived. Prince Rupert did end up being a railhead, but it's doubtful it would have ever grown to be a major city; certainly not one to rival Vancouver. PR is on a tiny mountain island with no room to grow, and no fertile expanses of farmland like the Fraser Valley on its doorstep. It's very far from any other major settlement.
This is also just my opinion - but I think a lot of people would agree with me - but Prince Rupert has a terrible climate. In fact, I would say Prince Rupert has the worst climate for any city in Canada that isn't in the arctic. I don't care that it doesn't get very cold. I'd take -40 with sun and leaves that only come out in mid-June over 240 days of rain and only 1,200 hours of sunshine/year.
