some demolition pics. I remember going to Lucky Lounge and Red Fez in the building on the left and that Red Fez was previously a dry cleaner (I think). The larger building on the right had Antone's for a spell and Smash ping pong bar most recently.

Info from ABJ article:
https://www-bizjournals-com.atxlibrary.i...nent-downtown-hotel-hilton-site-atx.html

Barriers have been raised and a notice has been posted for the imminent demolition of a building at the corner of West 5th and Lavaca streets in downtown Austin. The property will soon give way to construction of a dual-branded Hilton hotel.

Demolition activity of the former Smash ATX bar at 415 Lavaca St. began July 21, according to a notice posted on the building’s exterior, though the building is still intact today. Once demolished, Atlanta-based real estate private equity investment firm Peachtree Group and Austin-based Merritt Development Group will redevelop the property into a dual-branded Embassy Suites by Hilton and Tempo by Hilton hotel. Those plans were confirmed by Charles Talbert, vice president of corporate communications at Peachtree.

“Austin continues to attract businesses, residents and visitors at a pace few markets can match,” Talbert said in an emailed statement. “Combined with the expansion of the Austin Convention Center and continued investment throughout downtown, we believe the city is entering another exciting phase of growth. Our hotel will add to the energy and excitement building across downtown Austin, creating a premier hospitality destination.”

The 480-room hotel will be 30 stories and will total 336,800 square feet, according to the site development plans and permit, which were approved in summer 2024.

The hotel is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2029, Talbert stated.

While downtown Austin is no stranger to construction, the cranes which peppered the skyline throughout the early 2020s have largely disappeared. When vertical construction of this new hotel begins, it should be one of the few cranes in the sky.

This new hotel follows a string of other downtown hotels to make the news in recent months.

White Lodging’s Hotel Trinity at the corner of Fifth and Trinity streets is expected to open in November. JMI Realty recently purchased the Hilton Garden Inn Austin Downtown. The Line Austin and the Hyatt Centric, both located along Congress Avenue, were each foreclosed on and returned to lenders in June.
