But are they truly ‘one-off’? It sounds to me as if they are just the well-regarded EURODUAL locomotives (with a bit more insulation to take them from -40 to -50 operating temperature).

The contract also includes 20 years of support.

(Although I’m pretty sure that the Stadler press release has a picture of the Siemens Charger – based on the large ‘X-vent’. I doubt that Stadler will copy a feature that reportedly causes issues in snowy conditions.)

And, apparently, an announcement about new passenger cars will be made soon.

PS golfguy9, I didn’t get the ‘Cyclone’ reference. Can you offer more information about it?

If I'm not mistaken, Cyclone refers to the Helicopter chosen to replace the Sea King. The Cyclone is the — orphan from Sikorsky (now Lockheed Martin) that doesn't work well and is not supported by the parent company. We got into this mess because Jean Chretien deemed the original SK replacement as a "Cadillac" and that a "Chevrolet" would do. In the end we got an "Edsel" for the price of a "Bugatti"

It’s a civilian aircraft with military variants mostly used for things like VIP transport. Only Canada thought it was a good idea to use them as a naval helicopter with combat roles. They were ordered under Martin and delivered under Trudeau, so Chrétien appears to be the scapegoat here.

I am not sure it is the right analogy, it is a passenger train company making passenger trains. Perhaps the better analogy is the Kingston ferry or Ottawa LRT where nobody bothered to check if the vehicles were fit for purpose, although the Stadler vehicles Ottawa uses on Line 2 seem to have had fewer problems.

Chretien cancelled the Naval Variant of the EH101 project so yes, he deserves all the venom from Naval Air and the RCN.

VANRIDERFAN is correct regarding the Cyclone and acottawa, you're right, I should have used a more local example of the LRT trainsets not being compatible.

Reading some more comments, people are saying we should have gone with a more freight style locomotive with 6 axles but the current F40PH's are 4, similar to the renders Stadler has shown. I do take comfort in the fact that the Swiss are pretty good at everything and the FLIRTs we are using here seem to be pretty robust so far.
