Like I get they want a 50-metre pool back but suing the City could mean no pool here and no funding for what could be over a decade.

Perhaps true but do you blame them? They had a 50m pool and the city has put forth no compelling reason why they shouldn't have a like for like replacement.

I will blame them for the additional costs and delay.

I thought the City did have a reason and it was due to costs and timelines.

The state of pools specifically and community centres in general is embarrassing in this City. The finger pointing between the PB and the City is a joke.

Without the boost we got with some of the facilities for the 2010 games we'd resemble the Soviet area.

Cost? That's really a concern by the same city that has no problem blowing $320 million on a four week FIFA bun toss vs a 50 year asset?

IIRC it's the ABC-led Park Board trying to save money. Elect a different council and Park Board, and the 50m might come back.

PB should be abolished. The City has to pay anyway, let them face the public more directly.

Yes, as you say without control of the purse strings it is just another layer of bureaucracy. it is a shame ABC backed down on the abolishment plan. Do the people fighting it even realize that other than Vancouver and Minneapolis, no major North American city has an elected Parks Board?

Residents on Vancouver’s east side could see some long-term relief from sun and heat if a park board proposal to increase the tree canopy is approved on July 27.

Vancouver park board staff is recommending the approval of a $4.5 million plan to improve tree canopies in Marpole, Sunset, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Renfrew-Collingwood as well as Strathcona, Grandview-Woodland and Hastings-Sunrise.

The plan would expand existing street tree planting programs by adding about 3,000 new trees in the targeted areas in an effort to address inequities in urban tree canopy coverage…

Somewhat off topic, but is Marpole considered the East Side by some? It doesn't really feel West Side-y to me but it doesn't feel all that East Side-y to me either. It's industrial, there's a lot of cookie-cutter 70s-00s spec houses, and it's full of old walkups which definitely feels East Side-y. Yes, yes, "Ontario Street" but when you get that far south I think the definition might break down a bit.

Anecdotally as an East Sider who is "blessed" to have very mature trees down my street, I definitely feel the health "benefits" when I'm raking leaves in the pouring rain, climbing ladders to clear my gutters, and lifting broken branches off my car windshield. I could do without those "benefits".

It's South Vancouver more than anything. I live in Oakridge/Langara area, to me it doesn't really feel like "East Side" until I get to Main Street.

The tree canopy question is interesting, because residents in East Van probably make a lot more use of their back (and front) yards for growing vegetables than west side residents, so lots of shade isn't necessarily desireable.

Vancouver's newest park, yet to publicly receive a name, at Main & E 7th is more or less open. Most of the construction fencing has been removed save for around the shade structure which is still being worked on.

I'll start the conversation early; Please can they just give it an anglicized indigenous name? "sθәqәlxenәm ts'exwts'áxwi7" is I think just universally called either Rainbow Park or "the park on Richards" now, but that's of course not the official name.
