Took down some trees that were in the way. Something is getting built in the beside the Aurora Staples, in the early ground work phase (city forgot to post the building permit report this week). Steel going up for the first building. First foundation pour last night for the second building. Putting the base layer on the building pad in the NE corner of the site. Also starting yet another pad in the NW corner of the site. And some pipeline work.

Only put a few beams up at the Costco along the north wall. I noticed the reason the 3rd / 4th rows aren't complete is because two column bases were missing. One was poured yesterday and the other today, both much wider than the others, maybe the pile positions were off. This morning I noticed they were running the reclaimer in the SW corner again, by this evening they had it graded compacted and had started rolling out fabric and putting road base down. I think the put conduit in for the lighting the other day too.

I just noticed they poured another section of foundation footer on the SE side today. So easy to miss the suble changes.

UTV Proposal: Could Cornwall Centre’s Vacant Bay Space Become Regina’s Next Sports and Entertainment Destination?

A community conversation about reimagining downtown spaces for a changing city
REGINA — What if one of downtown Regina’s largest vacant spaces could become something new?

UTV Canada is bringing forward a community conversation: could the former Bay area at Cornwall Centre be explored as a future location for a sports, recreation, and entertainment destination?

The proposal comes at a time when cities across North America are rethinking how traditional retail spaces can serve communities in new ways. As shopping habits change, many downtown areas are exploring opportunities that combine entertainment, recreation, culture, and community gathering spaces.

During a recent community event, UTV Canada discussed the idea with Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski. The mayor recognized the growing popularity of basketball and other sports in the city, while noting that Cornwall Centre is privately owned and any future redevelopment would require collaboration with the property owners and potential partners.

The UTV proposal is not an existing city project, but an invitation for public discussion.
A future concept could include indoor basketball courts, youth sports facilities, multi-purpose recreation areas, community programming, entertainment spaces, or other attractions that could bring more people downtown.

Some residents have also expressed interest in more downtown entertainment options, including the possibility of a modern cinema or family-oriented destination.

However, major redevelopment would require careful study. Large sports facilities and entertainment venues involve significant investment, specialized construction requirements, market research, and long-term planning.

The larger question is about the future of downtown Regina:

How can the city’s existing spaces be reimagined to meet the needs of future generations?

UTV Canada is inviting residents, business leaders, community organizations, and decision-makers to share their ideas about what downtown Regina could become.

I'll have to check out the aquatic site tomorrow. Notice posted that much of the Lawson parking lot is closed / part of the construction site starting tomorrow. New section of Rink into Coopertown had first layer of pavement when I drove past there today.

4 rows of steel up along with columns for the 5th which should get done tomorrow. Working on the SW corner of the parking lot. Windy, I'm surprised I was able to get a downward looking shot.

Something going on at the airport while I was picking up family. 4 fire vehicles, ambulance, EMS supervisor and police were setup at the entrance. I was already waiting before they setup at the entrance, they were still letting people in (presumbably if they were picking up arrivals). Checked the airport page and the next arrivals / departures are delayed.

Gecho you might want to fly by the former CBS site as demolition is in full swing.

Regarding the Aquatic Centre, it is interesting that after months of delays, they shut down all the parking around the Lawson just in time for the QC EX. I have a bad feeling about this facility. It is already a boondoggle, but it could get worse.

Speaking of boondoggles, I just read the Administration report on the latest Globe Theatre bailout. They lay the blame on the obscene $45 million construction costs of their building reno. Shockingly there is not one mention of the Globe seeking to cut costs. If you look at the Globe's website they have a huge number of employees. I know nothing about the live theatre business, but it seems to me they should be trying to match their expenses to their income and donations, rather than looking for constant taxpayer bailouts.

Checked out a few places while driving over to see if I could catch some demolition work. I think they had started the aquatic centre excavation last week as there is a terraced edge east of the truck getting loaded. QCX setup underway. I noticed in the background there is work being done on the building where the Queen City Distillery was original supposed to go. I just noticed in the Mosaic stadium photo there is a covered structure in the far north parking lot, that lot has been blocked off for a few weeks.

Demolition work is hard to catch video action of because its mostly sorting, hard to catch the rare exciting parts. I'll get some more shots this evening. I was going to get some lower shots closer to Broadway but some workers were hanging out in the shade there as I arrived towards the end of lunch.

Premier Scott Moe pushing Ottawa to help fund three event centre projects in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan’s premier is asking the federal government to help finance event centre projects in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and North Battleford.

According to the provincial government, Premier Scott Moe has written to Gregor Robertson, Canada’s federal housing minister, seeking funding for the Downtown Event and Entertainment District in Saskatoon, the Prince Albert Convention and Cultural Centre and the Battlefords Arena and Event Centre through Ottawa’s Build Communities Strong Fund.

Where is the event centre for Regina like this is really discrimination beyond belief. The last event centre was built 50 years ago The hospital is the most ugliest in Canada and they can’t do anything

Mostly done the second to last row of steel at the Costco. Final row will have to wait until they finish the footer at the front of the building, though they could do a bit on the north side since that footer and wall is done. Laid a curb behind the building. Took a lot of photos at the Canadian Blood Services demolition site. There's a lot of debris they might load out tomorrow before they start knocking down the section they were working on. Tricky site to fly low around due to the trees and power cables, along Broadway there is a cable between two street lights.

I think they've been doing a concrete pour most nights for the past week, probably going to do the final pour on the first building tomorrow night. I just noticed that they are using two crews with separate pumps starting in the middle and working outward. Its bad enough when one bird gets annoying with the drone, but when I was coming in to land after the data centre I pissed off an entire flock of them. Maybe 20 small birds circling it taking turns swooping at it. Instead of coming straight down like I usually do for the last bit I kept it moving forward doing a spiral descent. They followed it right to the ground.

Nor do we need one. With Brandt taking over the Brandt Centre ownership, it will be 15 years before we see a new arena. The Brandt Centre is perfectly adequate for the Pats and 90% of other uses.

Was hoping to catch some demolition work, but all the work was inside the building this morning. I might stop by in the afternoon since I need to pick up a spare tube after getting a flat on the way home. I usually patch tubes over and over, but that one also has a hole so small it loses 10 psi a week and a leak that small is impossible to find. They are cutting into the roof of the building the Queen City Distillery was going in, guess they have to finish the exterior work they started.

If I had a choice, I'd direct more funding into making people's lives better (so they are happier, with less stress) than into pouring more concrete. Yes, we need infrastructure and buildings and all that in a city, but it is what comes from being a city, not what makes a city.
