If this goes through and construction starts it looks like 2.2km of sewer line will need to be upgraded.

The public hearing for this application has begun.

It can be viewed from the city's website
https://council.vancouver.ca/20260723/phea20260723ag.htm

or from the city's YouTube account
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OppaGQvqm2M&list=PLlxyRNZ4R8c-A3wsZLY8O1_HIKv2MqQfz&index=2

There are 326 people registered to speak, and Unite Here has submitted a petition with 8,000 signatures in opposition. City council has voted to vary the agenda, so the super tall is now the first item that will be heard, and the meeting will continue until at least midnight.

Listened to a couple of speakers and i had underestimated how irritating it is to listen to people complain and oppose any and all development. Someone literally said we should reject all hotel developments until all those working in those hotels can live in Vancouver… listening to these speakers one would think Vancouverites live in a tiny village in the 1800s, not a cosmopolitan 21st century city. I would say 1 /4 speakers support the development. One speaker said he is a Victoria resident and is opposing the building, make it make sense.

Yeah, the hospitality workers union organised callers to call in from all over to oppose this. People called in from California and New Jersey, as well as other cities in Western Canada.

Pretty ridiculous IMO.

Maybe this is the root of it:

From Google search:
Quote:
No, the Paradox Hotel Vancouver is not unionized under major hospitality unions like UNITE HERE Local 40, unlike several other downtown Vancouver properties.
Labor Status DetailsUnion Presence: Public records and union targeting lists do not show an active collective agreement or certification for workers at the Paradox Hotel.
Comparison: Other nearby properties (such as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Hyatt Regency, and Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront) maintain certified union workforces and collective agreements.
If you need help finding specific fair-labor or union-backed hotels in the Vancouver area, let me know!

The union is an ingredient in the function of the city as a whole. If they wish to interfere with how the city does business, they can go back to Chicago.

These people are nuts:

"Following last night’s public hearing at Vancouver City Council, UNITE HERE Local 40 President Zailda Chan is calling for an investigation into the ABC majority’s treatment of predominantly racialized women workers who testified about affordability and how developers shape the city we live in.

The union is also demanding an immediate moratorium on major hotel and luxury-development hearings and approvals until its legal and human rights complaints are addressed and Vancouver voters have had their say."

On the contrary, I think Unions are the ones that shape the affordability of a city. Countries with uncontrolled strong unions often drive up the cost of living due to their constant high demands as they are operated like a business with large profits in mind. Their members are their shareholders that also have powers to hold us hostage by not only inconveniencing the public, but also to destroy the economy at their Union leaders' biddings. Many public services, including healthcare, are now substandard because pro-Union governments keep giving in to the Unions even when the coffers are running out of cash. Ever wonder why our debt is in record level now?

Developers that are facing huge financial risks are just scapegoats, and I am not surprised that Unions are the ones demonizing them.

That is how the developing world keeping Unions at bay can beat us in so many sectors. People in the Western societies just fail to see that, or refuse to admit it as they are in some way benefitted by Unions, while everyone else is paying for their whims and greed.

Gee, I wonder how countries with bigger and more protected unions are building more stuff than we are.

Presumably a Unite Here mailing list email with a link to "sign".

The union organized out-of-towners to call in opposition? California people who have never even been to Vancouver are opposed to this project.

On the clip they played on the radio the one woman said she was scared this Vancouver project would set a precedent and happen where she lives in California.

I mean I think Sim was being a little dramatic calling this a conspiracy, but these people should not be able to contribute to our public engagement process.

Hopefully this ends up being a nothingburger, plop a red strobe on top and have NAV Canada update charts.

Quote:
City staff said NAV Canada — the entity that operates and regulates the country’s civil air navigation system — recently advised the proponent that design changes may be required to satisfy federal aviation requirements, including a possible reduction of approximately 88 ft. (27 metres) from the height of the hotel tower topped off by the observation deck attraction.

However, Gregory Henriquez, managing principal of Henriquez Partners Architects, the Vancouver-based firm behind the project’s design, said the issue could be resolved through further discussions with NAV Canada and additional design development during later planning stages over the coming years.

Both cities have regulations about the heights of buildings where they potentially affect air traffic. In Hong Kong they can potentially demolsh any structure that exceeds regulations.

In Canada the same regulations apply across the country, and we know that taller buildings have been built in Toronto and Alberta, so the issue here has to be with the specific flight paths that are in place over Downtown that NAV Canada regulate. It seems like the architects believe there's a solution that will be acceptable to NAV Canada.
