Great photos, thanks for the updates! Did you happen to see any action at 509 12th St on your tour through Nutana? I haven’t heard of anything on that project lately, last I heard they were still looking for an anchor tenant. Their website also shows the status as pre-construction.

Hello!
I actually drove past 509 12th st yesterday. There is construction fencing and a couple seacans... I also believe it's on pause until they get a lead tenant.
The 26 story condo proposed for 555 12th st e has also been approved by city council.. nothing happening there.
Also checked the Star Phoenix building project ... for a 35 story condo/mixed use (204 5th ave n) I believe they're still waiting for rezoning approval. Only thing new there, is a sign advertising building and land for lease .

Some interesting news on the rare earth facility in Saskatoon with the first expansion just about done and ready for production early 2027, found this talk in government site about second expansion if things go well
Quote:
Based on that work there is the third piece, where REA are interested in building a very large rare earths facility in Saskatoon, which would be approximately 7 to 10 times the scale of the current REPF. So we talked about, you know, two Costcos; this would be 20 Costcos. So it would be approaching a million square feet, so a very sizable facility. And we’re at the stages of looking at a pre-feasibility study to be able to do that. If that went ahead, that would be in the sort of 2031‑32 horizon.

Thanks for the article, I hadn’t seen that one before. It surprises me that there’s only 3,000 downtown residents. This project alone would increase that number by about 30%!

Also someone in the standing committee is poor at math. A million SF facility would be 6.5 Costcos, not 20.

Saskatchewan Calls for Enhanced Federal Provincial Partnership for Infrastructure Investments

The Government of Saskatchewan has formally endorsed the DEED project in a letter to the Federal Government calling for funding, and has committed to cost-matching federal dollars up to a maximum of 1/3 of project costs.

Between this and the partnership being explored with Muskeg Lake, I think we're going to see this project really heat up over the next couple years.

On Meadows Parkway, next door to the South Costco.

Housing in this neighborhood has exploded! Townhouses are up less than a block to the west of Zimmerman Road...

The east end of Rosewood is going to be a very busy place in another year or two with all this high density housing! I saw a drill rig and pile cages on the north west corner of the site a week or two ago. I imagine we’ll see the superstructure come to life soon. If I’m not mistaken, this new building will be the grocery store which I’ve heard from word of mouth will be a Safeway or Sobey’s. Not sure how credible that intel is though.

When Baydo fills up both towers that should add about 1,000 people ish to that block. I'd assume the Star Phoenix site development could add another apx 1,500 people on 5th on top of that.

All said and done, there would be some legitimate density in the blocks around 5th and 24th, hopefully in turn making amenities in the immediate area more likely (grocery, gym, etc).

It sure would be nice to at least get a couple blocks to the point downtown where you can take the elevator down to ground and have your grocery, gym, coffee shops, and a couple restaurants within a short walk.

There's also a surface lot on the corner of 5th and 24th that would be a good candidate for another tower.... time will tell!

EDIT: on top of downtown proper, there are about 5,000 in city park, 4,000 in Riversdale. We've got to be close to the numbers required for some of these amenities to start moving in

Technically, anything north of 25th street is part of City Park.

Downtown is south of 25th and east of Idylwyld.

Hoping to hear some perspectives regarding the potential DEED for Saskatoon. It always seems to be the angriest and most negative that get the most attention.
I'm in favor of this project, and I think the city would benefit tremendously!
Does this article just add fuel to the fire?

I’m so tired of the pushback on everything worthwhile in this city. It’s exhausting. We keep losing graduates to Calgary and it’s things like this that are to blame. Every exciting project is railroaded for YEARS until we finally push it through with a reduced scope due to “unforeseen cost increases”…. What is unforeseen about time wasted = cost increases??

I just spent some time in downtown Calgary for the first time in a while. It was so lively with patios, foot traffic, etc.

We will never, ever achieve that here with opposition to something as objectively beneficial as a downtown arena. I get it, we’ll never have an NHL team.. so what?

Between blades, rush, rattlers, concerts, trade shows, etc that is how many times per year you’d have thousands of people downtown spending money before and after an event? Not to mention how many more concerts would stop here since a modern arena can accommodate the modern stage setups, and how many more people would pop in to a rush or blades game if it was actually close and convenient

I’ve always loved Saskatoon and I’ve always wanted us to propel forward. Maybe I’m being cynical but this whole DEED thing has made me kind of feel like we just aren’t hungry enough for improvement here

DEED seems to be getting all kinds of public support from feds, province, city, first nations... so of course the old money local media cranks get irritated that they won't have their dumb little fiefdom to rule over anymore if enough people here with brains decide to set down roots. And generally speaking, what's good for the people seems to be the opposite of the current stewards of the right wing brain trust thinks is good for business. And if it's not dour and isolating, it's not worth taking seriously I'm sure the CPC and US-funded media are scared thinking about the Libs finally giving them a political drumming in this city, so they want to try to give "city folk" every reason not to move here. Those people aren't in charge, and they don't have the power they aspire to. A bunch of loudmouths in a voting public who has endorsed these Atch/Clark era plans for a long time now. This is all a bunch of baloney to make people think the opposition is greater than it is, when even the Sask Party is on board with it.

Nice to see this project keep popping up. Hopefully they get enough action with pre-sales to actually get shovels in the ground. It would be a HUGE step in the right direction for the neighbourhood
